Busy night in local college hoops

Five of the city's basketball schools are in action tonight, including the first matchup of two city schools when Penn and Drexel face off in the Battle of 33rd Street.

Here is a look at what's on tap:


La Salle (2-1) vs. Morgan State (1-1)

When: 3 o'clock

Where: Tom Gola Arena

Radio: WHAT (1340-AM)

Notes: This game is part of the Cancun Challenge. La Salle will play Providence in Cancun, Mexico, on Tuesday. The Explorers are coming off an 88-74 win over Prairie View A&M on Thursday. Jerrell Williams had 21 points and 14 rebounds (eight offensive). He is averaging nearly a double-double with 14.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Morgan State, the 2010 MEAC champion, has on its roster junior forward Ameer Ali, who attended Simon Gratz High.

Saint Joseph's (0-2) vs. Norfolk State (1-1)

When: 4 o'clock

Where: Hagan Arena

Radio: WNTP (990-AM)

Notes: Hawks have lost to Western Kentucky and at Penn State. Carl Jones (13.5) and Idris Hilliard (12.5) lead the Hawks in scoring. Norfolk State is a member of the MEAC. Norfolk State freshman guard Pendarvis Williams played at Bodine and the Hun School.

Drexel (1-0) at Penn (1-1)

When: 7 o'clock

Where: Palestra

Radio: WXPN (88.5-FM)

Notes: This is the "Battle of 33rd Street," as it is called on Drexel's Web site. Penn is coming off a 59-54 loss at Manhattan. The Quakers led by 12 with 7 minutes to play before the Jaspers had a 17-0 run. Drexel opened with a 75-72 victory at Loyola, Md.

Villanova (3-0) vs. Lafayette (1-2)

When: 7 o'clock

Where: Pavilion

Radio: ESPN (950-AM)

Notes: Villanova advanced to the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off with wins over Marist and Boston U. Villanova will play UCLA at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday. Fran O'Hanlon is in his 16th season as the Leopards' coach. O'Hanlon played at Villanova and was an assistant at Penn under Fran Dunphy.
