Stunning makeover

What do you think of the Flyers trades?
Thumbs up on Carter deal only
Thumbs up on Richards deal only
Thumbs up on both
Thumbs down on both

They say the aftershock is sometimes more powerful than the original quake. The Flyers proved that old saying true Thursday.

Minutes after news broke that they’d traded Jeff Carter to Columbus, an even more stunning deal came to light. Captain Mike Richards was dealt to the Los Angeles Kings.

Wow. Then double wow.

After the Flyers were eliminated in the second round by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins, there was talk about taking the “C” off Richards’ sweater. That would have been a pretty clear sign that GM Paul Holmgren and coach Peter Laviolette wanted to change up the chemistry on this team. But this? Dealing both of the joined-at-the-hip, faces-of-the-franchise, signed-for-eternity forwards will utterly remake this hockey team.

A line has been drawn in the ice.

This is about much more than merely creating salary-cap space for goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov and winger Ville Leino. This suggests that Laviolette wasn’t happy with the tone set by Richards and Carter and Holmgren agreed it was time to side with a coach instead of disaffected players.

The Flyers’ new wave of star players – Claude Giroux and James van Riemsdyk – are ready to lead the way. They’ve already shown they are ready to rise to the postseason occasion.

In that sense, this is a bit like the Phillies’ trading of Bobby Abreu back in 2006. Yes, they have up a productive veteran player, but they gave young stars Ryan Howard and Chase Utley space in the clubhouse. They did a pretty good job of filling it.

There is certainly a high risk to accompany the possible high reward. Reports followed quickly that the Flyers had a nine-year, $51 million deal with Bryzgalov. That would run until he is 39 years old.

If he is finally the man capable of carrying this team to a Cup, then this will look like a masterstroke. If not, and if the Flyers’ offense suffers, this will be just another overreaction made in order to undo last year’s mistakes.

Remember, coming out of the 2004 lockout, how they bulked up with big defensemen Derian Hatcher and Mike Rathje? Then they discovered – in the playoffs, where lessons are impossible to ignore -- that big slow defensemen were exactly the wrong way to go under the new rules designed to limit grabbing and clutching?

No doubt goaltending was a disaster for the Flyers in the playoffs this year. And they look very shortsighted, considering they had shots at Tim Thomas, Evgeni Nabokov and Antti Niemi last offseason. The Flyers put themselves in a position where they almost had to address the position, and now they risk overpaying for a Bryzgalov.

Finally, don’t underestimate the value of those draft picks acquired in the trades. Carter, Richards, Giroux and van Riemsdyk are all products of the draft. It is an area of strength for Holmgren. Maybe the next Carter will be scooped up with one of those picks.

I would have hated to be the guy who had to call Carter with this news. For a guy who seems to get the most out of living in a lively city like Philadelphia, a trade to Columbus has to sting. Even with all those Ohio State kids around, this seems more like a punishment than a simple trade. When he heard his pal Richards was going to Hollywood, it must have been twice as painful.

All told, this is easily the biggest Flyers-related shock since the day Bob Clarke resigned and Ken Hitchcock was fired. The seismograph had been relatively quiet since then.

One of my points to getting a solid starting goalie is the time Pronger and Kimmo have had to be on the ice the past two years to protect our sub-par goaltending.

I'm ok with Carter but not Richards. Richards is one of the best two way players in the league. He goes into the corners and does the dirty work that other guys don't want to do so he doesn't put up star numbers. The press has been critical of his leadership style since they gave him the C. Pro athletes should not need a rah rah guy to be a motivator. Nobody dares say anything about Utley and they have the same attitude. We shall see.

I'm fine with the trades, but it makes you wonder whether Bryz will even sign here now. If the two sides cannot agree then this will be a very bad move. Me thinks they must have a deal in place. That said, if this guy knows they sent their top 2 scorers away so they could sign him, I'd hate to be the coach if he ever needs to pull the guy, or actually have to coach him. Bryz will have this team by the bells...Giroux, Lieno and JVR and one of the new guys better step up big time.

These aren't moves to get the Cup next year, or year after!

This is a re-build that will time to come together.

I thought the idea was to get a goalie that was the finishing touch on a team poised to win it all.

    That's not what just happened . . .

If that's what the brass considers "overwhelmed" by offers, well there are some local inline skate leagues they should scout. Flyer fan living in LA and that trade is a joke for us. We sooo overpaid for Bryz. Not only in money but his talent will be passed by Bob in 2 years at the most. Lavy panicked with Bob in the playoffs plain and simple. When the team played D he was just about as good as any goalie in the league considering it was his first full year (the fact Lavy couldn't get them to play D falls upon him). If we dump Bob, we will regret it. If we don't, we'll be right back where we started with the whole goalie swap thing. There are so many things wrong with what happened today, it's almost impossible to start listing them.

Now maybe we don't unload Bob and maybe we pick up a couple of FA's. We could get lucky and score a top guy at #8. A whole lotta maybes that I'm not comfortable with today. trying to be optimistic but it's hard.

What a great job by the top brass to get elite talent in return for bloated contracts on mediocre players. Can't wait to see Schenn, he's one of the top few prospects in all of the NHL.

Obviously there was dissension in the lockeroom, started right after the Giroux dustup and the Versteeg trade.....they never snapped out of it over the last 6 weeks of the season or in the playoffs....obviously blame was assigned to Carter and Richards. Ownership has sided with Pronger and Coach Lavy.....that much is a given. What we don't know yet is who else they are targeting either trades or as FAs. The other shoe has yet to drop. Stay tuned. Btw, the Vancouver Sun listed 6-7 players they thought they needed to get atleast one of to help get them over the hump and the Cup next year. Neither Carter nor Richards were on the list.

wow. all conjecture but... Carter & Richards are probably the biggest beneficiaries of the day: they had both lost their hunger once the long-term deals were done. Maybe this is the wake up call they need to really be as good as they can be. Sad it was never gonna happen here in Philly. As to the next rev Flyers... who knows? I don't get the 9 years thing (basic NHLonomics?) when much of the attraction to Bryz was presumedly mentoring Bob. Mayhaps a stroke of genius? Definitely fodder for abuse. There will be moments of suck for the new guys that bring on the 'we never should have traded Carter and/or Richards' posts here. (likely from the same people who were screaming for their heads during the 2nd half swoon and subsequent Bruins sweep). but hey. fun stuff. Let's Go Flyers!

Richards will learn to waste his time in LA even more then he did in Philly and Carter will have fun playing around with the girls of OSU--neither were as tough as past great Flyers, so let's see these new kids. Versteeg for Stamkos ... won't happen but would be nice ...

Richie can take his party attitude to Hollywood and Carts can play with the girls at OSU. Hope he liked Hitchcock!

I think we'll all have to wait until next Spring to see how this turns out ... Simmonds is tough as nails and Schenn could be the next Crosby. Schenn has led Team Canada Juniors for two years like all the greats have the past 40 years ... Great move, Homer!

It was time to shake up this team. Flyer's play from February on was nothing short of horrendous. And it carried right into the Boston series. I see a better team chemistry once everything shakes out and finally reliable goaltending! Plus, youth will benefit an otherwise aging team. Good trades Homer.
