Baseball: Haddonfield beats West Deptford on DiTomaso's walk-off HR

Steve DiTomaso was trying to get on base.

He ended up touching them all.

"I was trying to hit a single," DiTomaso, a  sophomore rightfielder, said after blasting a walk-off home run to lift Haddonfield to a 6-5 victory over West Deptford Tuesday in a Colonial Conference Liberty Division game.

DiTomaso drove a 1-1 pitch over the left-field fence leading off the bottom of the eighth inning on a warm, sunny afternoon at Haddonfield's Radnor Avenue field.

"I said, 'Get on, we'll drag (bunt) you over,'" Haddonfield coach Bob Bickel said. "When he hit it, I said, 'It has a chance.'"

DiTomaso said the walk-off home run was his first and the trot around the bases and leap into the waiting arms of his teammates at home plate was "probably one of the best moments of my life."

"There's nothing like it," DiTomaso said.

Senior shortstop Joe Loperfido, a Duke recruit, rapped a solo home run and RBI single and junior catcher John Cristino had three singles for Haddonfield (2-1).

Senior shortstop Kyle Garrison had a double, triple and two RBIs for West Deptford (1-1).

West Deptford rallied from a 5-1 deficit to force extra innings and got six innings of solid pitching plus two RBI singles from sophomore Jack Murphy.

"It was a great game," said West Deptford coach John Oehler, whose team had five sophomores in the starting lineup. "Our young guys, they'll grow from this."
