Football: Washington Twp. beat Cherry Hill East

By Phil Anastasia

Matt Long caught a pass in each end zone in the final 40 seconds of the first half to spark Washington Twp. to a 40-13 victory over CH East on Saturday.

The first was an interception that marked Washington Township's second goal-line stand of the second quarter.

The second was a 42-yard toucdown pass from Tom Hildebrand with just 0:08 on the clock that broke a 6-6 tie and created the momentum that carried WT to its fifth straight win.

Hildebrand, a senior quarterback, was 19-for-28 passing for 228 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a touchdown for Washington Township, which improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the WJFL American.

Long caught five passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns and senior Blaise Basile ran 12 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns for the Minutemen, who played perhaps their best game of the season before a large homecoming-day crowd at Tom Brown Field.

Senior Daishi Goto carried 31 times for 221 yards and two touchdowns for Cherry Hill East (3-4, 1-3), which had won three in a row.
