Football: Pennsauken's Friday night lights and picks

Pennsauken will play under the home Friday night lights for the first time in the history of the program tonight at 7 p.m. against Cherry Hill East.

The Indians, one of the few teams that still plays its home games on Saturdays, will bring in portable lights for the special occasion.

Legendary former Pennsauken coach Vince McAneney will perform the pre-game coin toss, according to Pennsauken coach Clint Tabb.

CH East is coached by former Pennsauken coach Tom Coen.

Pennsauken and CH East are both 0-1.

Of the 81 schools in the traditional South Jersey area that play football, just 15 play their home games on Saturdays.

They are Pennsauken, Audubon, Camden, Penns Grove, Woodrow Wilson, Gloucester Catholic, Haddon Twp., Haddon Hts., Overbrook, Paulsboro, St. Joseph, Rancocas Valley, Salem, Winslow Twp. and Woodbury.

Here's a closer look at several games this weekend:

Friday night at 7

Delsea (1-0) at Moorestown (1-0): This is a interesting clash of the power-running Crusaders against the spread, no-huddle Quakers. Delsea's ground game, led by senior QB Josh Awotunde and senior RB Tyrone Saud, will be tough for Moorestown to contain. Delsea also has an emerging threat in junior WR Bryan Dobzanski. Moorestown got a strong game in the opener from junior QB Tyreek Robinson. The Quakers hope to spring speedsters Anthony Bonett and Sidney Ruffin. This could be a big win for Delsea. If the Crusaders get past the dangerous Quakers, they likely will be favored to win every game the rest of the season. Pick: Delsea, 29-22.

Woodbury (1-0) at No. 10 West Deptford (1-0): WD coach Clyde Folson goes for his 200th win in a battle of neighbors and likely contenders in the South Jersey Group 1 and South Jersey Group 2, respectively. The Eagles' running game, led by Gerald Towns-Owens and Josh Cornelius, will challenge the Thundering Herd defense. WD must try to contain Woodbury's Anthony Averett, an Alabama recruit. Pick: West Deptford, 20-13.

No. 7 Shawnee (1-0) at No. 4 Williamstown (1-0): Lots of power points and Top 10 implications on the line in this clash of recent rivals. Shawnee showed some good offensive balance last week with a strong passing game led by QB Andrew Bertolino and WR Zach McHale and a solid ground game led by RB Rob DiOrio. Williamstown junior Marques Little is a threat as a runner and receiver. The Braves have a top defense led by LBs Buddy Brown, a Temple recruit, and Marcus Riley. The pick: Williamstown, 27-20.

Cherokee (1-0) at No. 8 Triton (1-0): This should be a heavy-hitting clash as both teams played outstanding defense in opener. One of these teams will be 2-0 at around 9:30 p.m. and sitting pretty in the early playoff picture. Triton senior RB Josh Woods likely will be the top big-play threat on the field. The pick: Triton, 13-10.

Paul VI (1-0) at Clearview (1-0): Paul VI senior Zach Grant, a Temple recruit, can score as a runner, receiver and returner. The Eagles are a little under the radar after a difficult 2011 season. But they've got a chance to get to 5-0 heading into an Oct. 19 battle with Timber Creek. The pick: Paul VI, 27-13.

Millville (1-0) at Mainland (1-0): One of these Cape American rivals will emerge from this game as a serious division and playoff contender. Millville sophomore Rob Ennis already is drawing comparisons to graduated star Alquann Jones. Mainland will show off new unis in the first home game of the season. The pick: Millville, 22-20.

Gloucester (1-0) at Schalick (1-0): The Lions are darkhorse South Jersey Group 1 contenders with a top 1-2 punch at running back in junior Ben Boyer and senior Larry Spann. Gloucester coach Leon Harris goes for his 175th career win. The pick: Gloucester, 27-21.

Cinnaminson (1-0) at Northern Burlington (0-1). These teams played a 56-55 game won by the Pirates last season. This one will match Cinnaminson's ground game led by running back Tom Donnelly against NBC's passing attack led by quarterback Colin Fitzpatrick and wide receiver Andrew Cargill, who had 243 receiving yards in loss to Princeton. The pick: Cinnaminson, 28-27.

Paulsboro (1-0) at Sterling (1-0): A week after beating Haddonfield, the Red Raiders take on another solid Colonial Liberty team. Paulsboro's sturdy defense, which shut out Haddonfield last week, is led by DE Julien Davenport. K/P Mike Maccarone is a major weapon. The pick: Paulsboro, 17-8.

Saturday at noon

No. 9 Holy Spirit (0-1) at No. 1 St. Joseph (1-0): A Cape American clash of fierce Non-Public rivals. St. Joseph run defense will be challenged by Holy Spirit's triple option offense featuring junior running back Talib Gerald. No rest of the weary in the realigned Cape American: SJ is coming off tough win over Absegami, while HS is coming off tough loss against Hammonton.The pick: St. Joseph, 21-14.

Saturday at 1
Audubon (1-0) at Haddon Heights (1-0): The Green Wave's hopes for an upset could ride on junior running back Kahlail Chisolm. HH has a play-maker in QB Dante Pinckney and a top linemen in Alex Thompson. The pick: Haddon Heights, 18-13.
