2017 Penn Relays: Day 2 live blog

Here are highlights from Day 2 of the annual track carnival at Franklin Field.

Highlights of Day 2 of the 2017 Penn Relays at Franklin Field:

6:29 p.m.: Bishop Shanahan junior Josh Hoey took fourth place in the mile run championship in 4:15.25.

5:34 p.m.: Tidbit for Penn Relays and Dallas Cowboys fans: Florida A&M's "Bullet" Bob Hayes won the open 100- and 220-yard races, on a cinder track, in 9.3 and 20.6 seconds, respectively, in 1964.

5:28 p.m.: Rancocas Valley's Nickolas Mirabelli was runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 204 feet, 8 inches. La Salle's Noah Walker (201-6) and Holy Spirit's Cade Antonucci (196-0) took third and firth place, respectively.

5:19 p.m.: Coming up shortly, Bishop Shanahan's Josh Hoey will look to repeat as champion in the mile run. Last year, while at Downingtown West, he won the event in 4 minutes, 11.90 seconds.

3:34 p.m.: Germantown Academy junior Kyle Garland placed seventh in the boys' high jump championship with a mark of 6 feet, 7 3/4 inches. Penn Wood's Dennis Manyeah was 15th (6-3 1/2). Lushane Wilson, of Jamaica's St. Jago, triumphed with a leap of 6-11 1/2.

2:05 p.m.: Led by USC-bound senior Chanel Brissett, Cheltenham will take part in the girls' 4x100 Championship of America. One of the favorites is Jamaica's Edwin Allen.

1:24 p.m.: Just got done talking with former Penn Wood and University of Houston standout Leroy Burrell. The two-time Olympian (1992 and 1996) is the head coach of Houston's track and field program. He is an an honory official at this year's Penn Relays. His eldest son, Cameron, is a top-notch sprinter for Houston.

12:48 p.m.: The women's 4x100 Championship of America, with Penn and Penn State among the field, is scheduled for 1 p.m.

12:45 p.m.: Leroy Burrell, the head coach of Houston's men team, is an honory official at this year's Penn Relays. The Lansdowne native twice set the world record for the 100-meter dash, setting a time of 9.90 seconds in June 1991.

10:18 a.m.: In a boys' 4x800 relay heat, Egg Harbor Township placed third in 7 minutes, 48.25 seconds. Pennsbury (7:50.23) took fifth.

9:50 a.m.: Day 1 of the NFL draft is over and now we switch our attention to Day 2 of the Penn Relays. It's a warm and muggy day at Franklin Field, so staying hydrated will be key for the competitors - and for us folks (writers and photographers) covering the event. Today is heavy on the boys' and men's events. The middle-schoolers will also get a chance to compete at this historic stadium.
