What we know about Jon Hoke

Adam Caplan of FoxSports.com is reporting that the Eagles have requested permission to interview Bears defensive backs coach Jon Hoke for their defensive coordinator opening.

Hoke has spent two seasons in Chicago. Last season, the Bears limited opposing QBs to a rating of 74.4, third-best in the NFL behind the Packers and the Steelers - the two teams in the Super Bowl.

The Bears allowed 14 touchdown passes, the second-fewest in the league behind the Saints. And Chicago had 21 interceptions, fifth-best.

Hoke has 28 years of coaching experience. He served as the Texans' defensive backs coach from 2002-2008. And from 1999-2001, he was Florida's defensive backs coach/defensive coordinator. He was also the assistant head coach with the Gators in 2000 and 2001.

He previously held college jobs at Missouri, Kent State, Bowling Green and San Diego State. In those four stops, he served as defensive coordinator once (in 1993 with Kent State).

Hoke played in college at Ball State and appeared in 11 NFL games with the Bears. He is 54.

Earlier this month, there was some thought that Jon would join his brother Brady, who took over as the head coach at the University of Michigan.

"Really, we have never talked about it," he said, per ESPNChicago.com. "He knows how I feel about pro football. He knows it's always been a dream of mine to coach in the National Football League. He knows I'm extremely happy here in Chicago."

While the Bears' pass defense was very good in 2010, it struggled in 2009 as opposing QBs had a 92.3 rating against Chicago, including 29 touchdown passes.
