What they're saying: Mornhinweg an option in Cleveland?

POSTED: Thursday, December 24, 2009, 10:56 AM
Could Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg be an option in Cleveland after this season? (David Maialetti/Staff Photographer)

Time to get caught up on some links from around the Web:

To be filed in the "Looking way ahead" category: Could Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg be a candidate for the Cleveland Browns' head coaching job?

Yes, the Browns currently have a coach in Eric Mangini.

But they could make a change after the season once Mike Holmgren is running the show.

Writes SI.com's Peter King:

Eric Mangini has gotten votes of confidence from a few players recently, and the team showed a lot of fight in victories over Pittsburgh and Kansas City. It's hard for me to imagine Holmgren keeping Mangini because I think he prefers someone who coaches the West Coast scheme he believes in (Marty Mornhinweg perhaps). But we'll see when he puts Mangini under his microscope after the New Year.

King is not the only one who has mentioned the possibility. ESPN's Chris Mortensen brought Mornhinweg's name up earlier this week on TV.

Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press Gazette says several sources who know Holmgren don't consider Mornhinweg a likely candidate.

Mornhinweg spent a pair of seasons as head coach of the Detroit Lions in 2001-2002, tallying a record of 5-27.

Meanwhile, Don Banks of SI.com has the Eagles fifth in his power rankings:

In case you've lost track, the Eagles are the obvious team of the decade in the NFC. And it's not even close. Philly will make its eighth playoff trip of the 2000s this season, and the Eagles lead all clubs in their conference in wins (102-55-1), division titles (five, with a shot at a sixth), playoff wins (10), winning seasons (eight), and trips to the NFC title game (five). The only downside is that Philadelphia is still chasing what division rivals in Dallas, New York and Washington all have in multiples: A Super Bowl ring.

King has the Eagles sixth in his power rankings, behind the Cowboys:

Tough call, Dallas leapfrogging Philly. But it comes down to Dallas' 20-16 head-to-head win six weeks ago and the quality of Dallas' win Saturday night. Still, Philly has a fighting chance to beat the Vikings for the second seed in the NFC playoffs.

ESPN.com has the Eagles fifth:

All of a sudden, the Eagles have a chance to steal a playoff bye week away from the Vikings.

CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco has the Eagles fifth:

They have a chance to actually end up with the second seed now. That could be huge. The pass offense is really clicking.

FoxSports.com's Adam Schein predicts a Saints-Eagles NFC championship. He makes the case for and against the Birds. Here is the case against:

If Philly doesn't get a bye, it's tough to win three games in the playoffs. LeSean McCoy hasn't run the ball in the tournament. Sean McDermott hasn't called plays in the playoffs. I don't love the linebackers. And the pressure seems to weigh on the Eagles as the games get bigger in the postseason.

Marty Mornhinweg is not going anywhere until his standout QB son moves on from the Prep in two years. It's a shame Banner did not elect to pay Dawk as that is the diffenence in us chasing the bye and being chased.......

Posidelphia . . . "The Case For: Philly has won five straight games in impressive fashion. Donovan McNabb is playing excellent ball. DeSean Jackson is the ultimate weapon going deep. Brent Celek has emerged as a legit weapon over the middle. The Philly offensive line has stabilized with its health and consequently its play, mauling the opposition. And Brian Westbrook is coming back. Philadelphia has an excellent cornerback combination and an aggressive defense. Andy Reid is one of the best coaches in the NFL. And the Eagles, with New Orleans and Minnesota dominating the conversation, don't have the pressure on them."

It doesn't matter what all the experts say, where the Birds are ranked, etc...it comes down to each game and executing plays. And the Eagles have been doing that, for several weeks now. O-line is getting better and better, defense seems to be eliminating mistakes, and finding which players play in certain situations. I like our chances, especially with Westbrook coming back. Can't wait to see him leave a wake of defenders behind him wiht his fresh legs...he's going to be faster than everybody out there without the milage of the season on him (granted he doesn't take another bump on the head)...Go Birds!

How is a passer rating of 72.2 dynamite? Get a clue.....the eagles are beating bad teams. They haven't beaten a good team. We'' see what happens once they play one in the playoffs. What you say?......"the pressure seems to weigh on the Eagles (read McLow) as the game gets bigger in the postseason...." Like we didn't already know that. TReam of the decade, my arse.

Mark: Don't know where you get your info from, but if you're refering to McNabb's Passer rating, perhaps you ought to read a little more and turn off WIP. His QB rating is 93.6.... http://espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1753

marty can go...the key element in 3 of the eagles 4 losses is the fact the offense had no balance...as long as there is a commitment to the running game the eagles can beat anybody anywhere

Marty haters...Are you serious? If anything, I think with the emergence of Weaver, they have found offensive balance (and responded with 5 straight wins). And Marty has doing a pretty decent job lately. In case you people haven't noticed, the Eagles are currently in second in scoring.

Marty! Please keep using Weaver after Westbrook returns! If both are used and there's balance, this team can be scary good. What will inevitably kill us will be this defense.

Weaver and McCoy were on the roster since beginning of the season. MARTY started using them for last 5 games after throwing 55 passes against Chargers. I believe in redemption. MARTY is doing better, but he still seems to be "pass" drunk....
