What they're saying about the Eagles

POSTED: Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 10:33 AM
A national columnist recently named Eagles QB Michael Vick the biggest jerk in the NFL. (Yong Kim/Staff Photographer)

Here's this week's roundup of what the national media are saying about the Eagles:

Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com has released his list of the NFL's 10 biggest jerks. Two Eagles, DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick, make the list. Jackson at six, and Vick at No. 1:

When is Vick allowed to move on? When is that threshold from criminal to forgiven criminal crossed? To some, it already has. But to many, like me, though it's clear that Vick has changed, the crime was so disgraceful, more time is still needed to make sure the change I've seen in him is not an act but permanent. There's almost a simple formula here to follow. The worse the crime, the more time it takes for the re-evaluation.

This is an arrogant approach for me and others, particularly since everyone judging Vick has made their own errors. But there are mistakes and then there are mistakes. For Vick, it will still take more time.

Matt Williamson of ESPN.com looks into his crystal ball and projects the top 15 pass rushers in 2015. He's got Trent Cole barely making the list at No. 15:

Cole is a fantastic, underrated player and pass-rusher. But will that hold true three years from now? Cole turns 30 this season, but he was a fantastic presence rushing the passer in 2011. Plus, the Eagles now have plenty of defensive end options to help spell Cole (and Jason Babin) and extend his career. From the honorable mention group, Chandler Jones was the one I thought had the best chance of being on this list ahead of an aging 2015 version of Cole.

Vick came in at No. 20 in Peter Schrager's Top 100 players list on FoxSports.com:

Vick in the top 25? You better believe it. He still strikes fear in the hearts of NFL coaches and defenders everywhere. And though the Eagles slipped and stumbled out of the gate in 2011, Philly finished the season with four straight victories and four straight mesmerizing performances out of Vick. With a full offseason to work with teammates, a healthy crew of receivers and a focus on the NFC East crown — don’t be shocked when Vick turns in the best season of his career.

Doug Farrar of Yahoo Sports takes a look at the 10 best third-day draft picks from 2011. Jason Kelce and Brian Rolle both make his list (Kelce at No. 2 and Rolle at No. 3):

A former walk-on linebacker at Cincinnati. Kelce turned himself into a draftable offensive lineman with pure tenacity. He beat incumbent Jamaal Jackson for the starting job in Eagles camp, and impressed legendary line coach Howard Mudd enough to become the Eagles' first center to start his first NFL game since 1968. Kelce played very well through injuries, and Mudd may have his next Jeff Saturday if Kelce can stay healthy.

Brian McIntyre of NFL.com has the contract details for Eagles safety Oshiomogho Atogwe. He'll make the league minimum ($825,000) with $100,000 fully guaranteed.

In case you missed it from today's Daily News, the crew that runs the Cowboys' Web site had a little birthday message for Vick.

And don't forget to check out the 2012 Eagles Almanac, which is chock full of great information to get you ready for training camp and the upcoming season.

Jackson should be at the top of the Jerk list.

I've been howling for years to Scrappy Doo that pit bulls should be tied to the closest fire hydrant and water boarded.

Read my post and let em know your thoughts. I became an eagles fan bc of Randall Cunningham and loved D McNabb. Could care a less about color of skin at qb. I want a winner and a champion. i also want someone who is a good role model. Vick has done a great job working to be a better person. I am not 100% ok with him, but I do recognize his efforts and what i see as sincerity in becoming a better person. I will be honest though I hope I am wrong, but I do not think you can win a super bowl with Vick bc of the turnovers. He has only won 2 playoff games in his career. that is not enough considering how many years played in NFL. I think he has all weapons can ask for this year and defense looks good on paper. He has to do his part this year to justify that contract and at least win a playoff game or 2. that is my opinion and nothing to do with his skin tone. Please think about when to say someone or that all white people are racist that do not like Vick. That is not true.

Thank you, I'm sure they forgot all about how they trained dogs to kill, people of color, and just think it hasn't been that many years ago, but they'll swear up and down it was during slavery..NOT

Allworld and blessed. Why can't someone be offended by Vick's crimes and not like him without being racist? I bet both of you go to church every sunday and act like your god fearing people. Honestly you can't turn everyone's opinions into a race issue. I am 32 and I am far from racist. My fiance is african american. I have no issues with any race. I don't like Vick much, but understand he has done his time. I actually think that people using race card and state people are racist need to look in mirror. Being racist can go both ways and toward any race! When you turn opinions into race issues that is what makes real racism get ignored. It only hurts what you complaining about. I say this all respectfully and from a point of view on neither side.

@charmaine you know why we have never heard of Nalley the guy who killed numerous of animals nobody cares because his name ain't Vick the media doesn't care the people don't care we live in a controlled society where people don't have opinions they have what the T.V. analyst gives them. That's why you have cases where people call kobe clutch and talk about all his heroic 4th qt buzzer beaters truth be told he ain't hit 1 since 2006 at least not playoffs where it matters lol!!!! That's why the 9/11 storty was so easily accepted, pure sheep!!!!

Fact of matter is I heard about Nalley, and not from the TV, I actually do volunteer work at a local rescue shelter, and read it from a newsletter that is circulated to all shelters. These who are complaining are doing only that complain, they do nothing to help or support shelters. They use the issue with the dogs as an excuse to continue to bash this man and spread hate. Nothing to do with dogs at all NOTHING. If I saw they should have seen it, I could understand if one maybe two not knowing but all of them .....No.

I'll tell you what's offensive - the fact that our home town media players lack a basic appreciation for our pro athletes or the ability to display the class enough to ignore such a childishly tawdry topic. Wonderful, someone with clout figured out how to push all the buttons of all the haters at once - bully on you!

Why not spend your time working on articles of some of the teams that we'll be facing this season? Or drilling down on emerging trends on defense and offense? Or write profile pieces on opposing players who we play against annually - like the Boston Globe & NYTimes seem to do on a regular basis?

Why chum the waters - bored?

I hate Vick because he not only participated in dog fighting but he also personally took part in the electrocution, drowning, and shooting of dogs that did not perform (he pled guilty to all of these). If he just went to the dog fights that would be one thing but participating in killing the dogs afterwards means that this guy is a real psychopath. Everyone wears a mask and sometimes the mask gets pulled back and you get to see the real person. If he were in any other profession (Doctors, lawyers, teachers, policeman, ect...) he would have never been allowed to work again (all those require moral behavior or else you lose your license). But because he can throw a football he gets to earn a $100 million contract. I’m sorry but he may have fooled some of you but this guy is a dirt bag. By the way so is Roethlisberger, Bret Myers, and the Duke lacrosse team but just because there are other dirtbags doesn’t mean Vick gets a pass.

I think it's a waste of a GOOD journalist time to continue to rake Mike Vick over the coals concerning the dog fighting rap. He's done his tme for God's sake! Why do people, who have nothing else better to do, continue to blast the man over and over again, GEEZ! I have two dogs and what he did was terrible, but I'm not going to continue to give him hell for it. Let it go people! There are no perfect people on this planet!

Funny thing is he did his time...hasnt gotten into any real trouble since. Let him be so he can move on. The man has talent lets not hate him for it. Yeah he may not be as good as ben or whoever you stack him up against but lets not dismiss what he brings to the table talent wise. he still is feared thru out the league period. Im not looking for a role model for my team. There are plenty of good guys who cant play worth a darn. Id take a RAY LEWIS who obstructs justice anyday. ireally dont care what he does in his free time! Ill take big ben the sexual "assualtist" too. Do we really care as just a football fan what these guys do off the field? Ill take james harrison, SUH and all the rest of the jerks , drunk drivers ,woman beaters and dog fighters i can find as a true fan if it meant a championship.

as oppossed to Rae Carrouth who killed his pregnant girlfriend, or all the players who beat their wives, or rape women(big ben), or let women get raped in their homes(brandon merriweather), or sell life destroying drugs to young children(Sam Hurd), none of which are even on anyone of your radars...all of their crimes are just as reprehensible or a million times worse...side note whoever keeps posting about pit bulls being horrible, your an idiot, dalmations attack more people and other dogs then any other breed...no dog is inherintely vicious its the ignorance of the owners. Oh and every day millionaries all over the world torture animals, and most of you cook and eat those same animals for dinner every effen night. Im a white, meat eating, tax payer who rescues animals on his own time and his own dime, but be honest every body on this site has someone in their family who committed a morrally reprehensible crime and im sure you would like to see them get a second chance after they paid their dues to society. Please think before you post you effen sychopants
