Nate Allen will be the starter at safety entering training, Andy Reid said. (Alejandro A. Alvarez/Staff file photo)

A lot can change between now and the Eagles' Week 1 game against the Packers.

But here are five thoughts on the defense after OTAs:

1. The Birds are going to count on at least three rookies to make pretty significant contributions. The first is Nate Allen, who Andy Reid said will be the starter opposite Quintin Mikell going into training camp. Allen seems like he has the ability and smarts to hold on to the starting job, although he'll have to fight off Quintin Demps. But there's a good chance the Eagles start a rookie at safety to start the season for the second year in a row.

Brandon Graham and Daniel Te'o-Nesheim also figure to see playing time right off the bat. If I had to guess now, I'd say Graham won't start in Week 1, but will rotate in for Juqua Parker at left defensive end and play a significant amount of snaps. Whenever the Eagles are in the nickel, expect Graham to sub in for Parker.

Te'o-Nesheim will also be a part of the rotation, most likely subbing in for Mike Patterson or Brodrick Bunkley inside on passing downs.

2. It's amazing how Trent Cole just blends in. The guy has had 34 sacks in the past three seasons, and is by far the team's best defensive lineman (and really, their best defensive player), yet I barely even noticed him at OTAs. I'm not really sure why Cole flies under the radar, but he does.

3. I know nothing more about Alex Hall than I did a month ago. The Eagles acquired Hall in the Sheldon Brown/Chris Gocong trade in the offseason. At OTAs, he played almost exclusively up at the line of scrimmage. He would appear to be more of an option on the defensive line than at linebacker at this point. Hall is only 24 years old. Maybe the Eagles look at him as a project. Or maybe they think he can play a role this season. Like I said, I really have no idea.

4. The most intriguing battle at Lehigh will be at right cornerback (Note: I wrote left CB at first. Thanks for commenter MidGreen for pointing out the error). Ellis Hobbs got the first-team reps there at OTAs, but he was not able to participate fully in practices. Reid said Hobbs will be ready to participate fully at training camp, but the job really should be wide open. Joselio Hanson wants it. And the Macho Harris cornerback experiment is likely to continue. Trevard Lindley is still learning, and while I think McDermott likes what the rookie has shown so far, I'd be surprised if he were a realistic candidate to start. Perhaps at training camp, I can provide a daily CB competition update.

5. I think Quintin Mikell might be the one of the most important Eagles in 2010. Last year, the defense was without Jim Johnson, Brian Dawkins and Stewart Bradley, and a lot of responsibility was placed on Mikell's shoulders. Probably an unfair amount. His play suffered. And communication was a major issue on D all season. This year, he could very well be teamed with another rookie at safety. And left cornerback is not expected to be a strength. Bradley's return will help. And Sean McDermott having a year of making calls under his belt will help too. But Mikell's performance will be key.

The Biggest Question is Cornerback and Saftey. I have full confidence in Nate Allen to be the saftey but Joselio Hanson is making his voice made by saying he wants to start. I also have Confidence in Hanson to start but his height is a big question mark. Well see who wins that job in training camp. Joselio Hanson or Ellis Hobbs?

Watch out for Lindley. I like what I've seen so far. He's six feet tall, long arms, good quickness. Smart guy. Hard worker. Man coverage seems to come naturally to him. With his college team that's pretty much all he did and it shows.

We don't really know what McDermott's defense will look like. The late Jim Johnson's was familiar and usually very reliable. Certainly speed and QB pressure appear to be prominent features: more pressure from fewer rushers.

Lindley is a longshot to start, but could definitely surprise at Lehigh, and I would love to see him do it, keeping Hanson at the slot, where he is best suited to be. As for the D, I think McD wants to put his own stamp on this defense, and he is going to do so by putting together a pass rushing group for 3rd down that will stand around at the line right before the snap, and since each of them will be able rush the passer or drop back in coverage, it will create the ultimate in confusion for the offensive line. It could be a group of any of the following; Tapp, Hall, Cole, Te'o, Graham, Parker and any of the LBs (including the rookies), with one guy (probably Cole or Parker) with his hand in the dirt and the rest moving around. At the snap, the OL has to determine who is coming and who isn't and odds suggest they are going to get it wrong sometimes, hopefully leading to sacks and qb fumbles.

sorry about that. computer or the operator going crazy. anyway, good football teams must be strong up the middle. rookie safety, MLB comming off of knee surgery, a new offensive center and q.b. and a reliable fullback. keep your fingers crossed eagle fans and hope for the best which will be one win over dallas and beat washington twice. that will be a successful 2010 season.

5 thoughts on the D? Only one thought needed: they are going to stink.

I'm betting the D line will be good (and improving over the year), the LB corps will be OK, and the secondary will have problems.

I'd most like to Hanson start over Hobbs, Harris or Lindley. Hopefully someday Lindley will emerge as a quality NFL corner. But I expect musical chairs at CB all season.

I like Cole, but the Eagles D is still missing that dynamic player that causes other teams to modify their game plan. The Redskins have a double team DT, the Boys have Ware, the Giants have super athletic DEs that you have to plan for, and we have..(cue the cricket noise)?? I hope the DE from Michigan can be that type of player, opposite T. Cole.

Reddgie - I'm assuming you meant nickel? In which case, I agree. I like what I've seen from Hanson on 3rd down. But he isn't even Rod Hood. Birds have a big hole at corner. Hope their "tackeling machine" Asante is ready to run down some WRs from the other side of the field.

One All-Pro (Cole) and a bunch of so-so players and rookies! Not going far with that collection!

Like FKD215 said, I really like the D line this season. It would be nice to see Bunkley and Patterson up their game from last season and solidify that line. If the D linemen can step it up and put constant pressure on the QB, then the rest of the defensive scheme should fall into line...Kind of scary hearing that there will be a rookie starting at FS. Keeping my fingers crossed w/ all the DB's.

Reality Speaks; S is one of the few positions where there is track record of a rookie who was able to start and play well, especially in the NFC East (Taylor and Landry in WA, Philips in NY), so we may be ok with Allen. I think he can ultimately be an above average player for us as he has all the necessary physical and mental tools, he seems to get "it" (and I hate the fact that I just used a term that wolfie uses regularly) as far as how important practice is and studying the playbook and according to the coaches, is ready to earn the job to remove any doubt. Seems like an exciting player to watch. That being said, so was Demps at one time.

I expect Lindley to play nickel and dime and maybe eventually be a starter once he gains aluable expeince. It seems Lindley might be better off starting at nickel whee he can jam the slot reieve ad be moe physical with the slot. From the reports from what I head from camp Lindley appeas to be doing great. Hope he keeps it up
