Cutler, Garcia, owners' meetings
Jeff Garcia still does not have a job.
The ex-Eagles quarterback was let go by the Bucs after last season and still has not been picked up.
It's bizarre to say the least when you look at the quarterbacks currently on NFL rosters. Let us not forget -- Dan Orlovsky got a three-year deal from the Texans.
Ed Thompson of Scout.com names seven teams who he thinks could benefit from adding Garcia.
And no, the Eagles are not on his list. Kevin Kolb will be entering his third year. Andy Reid thought enough of him to play Kolb against the Ravens, so they have to think he's capable of serving at least the backup role at this point.
In other news...
** Multiple NFL sources have told Gary Myers of the New York Daily News that the Jets have contacted the Broncos, expressing interest in Jay Cutler should he become available. Late last week, an NFL source told Mike Klis of The Denver Post that more than 10 teams had contacted the Broncos about Cutler. This really should come as no surprise. Cutler is 25, and has been a starter for two full seasons. You can say all you want about him whining and the Broncos faltering down the stretch last season, but NFL teams would be foolish to not have interest in a young, talented quarterback. Think about it. If you're the Lions, would you rather draft Matthew Stafford or take a chance on Cutler?
** While doing my part-time gig for profootballtalk.com yesterday, I stumbled across some rule changes that are expected to be discussed at the owners' meetings this week. Many involve player safety. According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, we could see some changes on special teams, including the elimination of three-man wedges and bunch formations on onside kicks. Mortensen said a rule could also be put into effect that would make it illegal for a defensive player on his knees to lunge at a quarterback. Think Bernard Pollard's season-ending hit on Tom Brady last season. Meanwhile, Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer said the league will look at eliminating blind-side blocks to the head. Note -- this would mean any block to the head, not just helmet-to-helmet.
** Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times and profootballtalk.com reports that Maryland cornerback Kevin Barnes will work out for the Eagles on April 5. As we noted yesterday, Barnes scored a 41 on his Wonderlic test, according to a Chicago Tribune report.
** Penn State product Aaron Maybin improved his 40 time during the Nittany Lions' Pro Day, according to Bob Flounders of PennLive.com. Maybin, who has bulked up significantly since the end of last season, reportedly ran a 4.59. He is expected to be a first-round pick.
** Cornerback Donald Strickland, who spent 2005 with the Eagles, is drawing interest from the Titans, 49ers and the Broncos, according the Nashville City Paper.
