Report: Eagles looking to trade Baskett

POSTED: Monday, September 14, 2009, 4:53 PM
Jeff Garcia played eight games for the Eagles in 2006. (Steven M. Falk/Staff file photo)

And so it continues.

ESPN's Sal Paolantonio is reporting that the Eagles are looking to deal Hank Baskett to clear up a roster spot for Jeff Garcia.

The Eagles carried seven wide receivers to start the season, but they only dressed five against the Panthers. Reggie Brown and rookie Brandon Gibson were both inactive.

Baskett played, but was not on the field a lot, catching one ball for 6 yards.

Last year, he caught 33 balls for 440 yards and three touchdowns. He's been with the Eagles since 2006.

From earlier:

I didn't know where to begin with the Jeff Garcia news. It raises several questions so I'm just going to list them.

But first, Andy Reid confirmed and explained the move during his radio show on WIP:

"It's a unique situation because Michael is suspended for a week and Donovan's banged up so we don't know how long Donovan's gonna be and at the same time, we need a second quarterback in there if needed for this weekend," Reid said.

Now the questions:

1. What does this say about the team's confidence in Kevin Kolb? To me, that is the biggest question here. All we've heard from the Eagles is that they like Kolb. It was almost as if they were anxious to see him perform in a situation like the one they are currently in. But now, it's tough to believe that. Does Sunday amount to a tryout? If Kolb plays poorly and Donovan McNabb can't go in Week 3, does Garcia get a chance? If Kolb starts Sunday and underperforms in the first half, do they turn to Garcia?

2. Why would Garcia want to come here for just a couple weeks? In the original post, I explained that A.J. Feeley choosing the Panthers made sense. He joins a team with a shaky QB situation instead of the Eagles, where he likely would be cut once Michael Vick was reinstated and McNabb got healthy. But shouldn't the same hold true for Garcia? Or have the Eagles explained to him that there's a chance he could hang on all season? Which, of course, would mean the end of Kolb's time here.

3. Who do the Eagles release? The team has officially annouced the Garcia deal, which means they have to make a roster move. Do they cut one of the guys along the defensive line? Do they part ways with one of their seven receivers? Someone else? Remember, as of last weekend, this year's contracts are guaranteed. In other words, they still have to pay and take the cap hit for whoever they let loose.

4. If the Eagles kept Garcia, Vick and McNabb, would they become the first team in history to have three former Pro Bowl QBs on the same roster?

5. What happens when McNabb gets healthy? Some were already worried that the fans would be calling for Vick. But now adding Garcia to the mix takes it to a different level. Fans loved him during that 2006 season.

6. Am I reading too much into this? Maybe it's just a matter of the Eagles needing a backup QB for a couple weeks, looking over the options and picking the player that was the best fit. If Garcia backs up Kolb for a couple weeks and then is released, we'll know that's all it was. Hard to take this one for face value though.

Earlier we posted a full notebook of how every offensive player performed in yesterday's game.

Am I first? Woo Hoo! We can do a lot worse than Garcia, that's for sure. Can he be ready to start on Sunday?

Awesome, I hope that he starts on Sunday. Anyone would be better than Kolb.

Garcia is a quality back up in this league at this point in his career, he's more than familiar with our version of the west coast offense, and will surely give us a quality start if Kolb goes down. I like the pick up if its true. As far as Kolb goes, there is alot to be said about taking reps with the first team players and getting your timing down. Its not as easy as most of our beloved armchair qbs think. I think Kolb has a decent game against New Orleans myself, conservative run first approach is all we need.

Sign Garcia. Vick can't play quarterback. Never could.

Just start Garcia. Kolb is a turnover machine. He looks like Mike McMahon. 2nd round pick, nothing. He's not ready. It's obvious.

this is a great move, clearly FO has no faith in Kolb and most likely, Vick isnt going to be ready to run an offense until late this year if at all. Problem is- they cant keep 4 qb, and vick would have to change his uni #7 if they take him out of the qb rotation on the depth chart. I bet they cut kolb after week 3

I don't think the Eagles management is looking at Vick as a viable option to replace an injured McNabb. If Donnie Mac is back in 2-3 weeks I think the Birds will try to wing it (pun intended). But if its going to be any longer they probably want more of a real NFL QB. Now why wouldn't they just throw Kolb in there and say get some experience? If anyone can figure out what Big Red is thinking then they would be the first.

So when Kolb fizzles, and in relief Garcia sizzles, will Reid admit his mistake and cut his losses (cut Kolb)? Nah, too stubborn. Garcia won't play unless Kolb gets hurt, and if he doesn't get hurt Garcia gets a paycheck for being an insurance policy until the Iggles bye week. Reid would rather lose 2 games with Kolb than admit he messed up another personnel evaluation and wasted a 2nd round draft pick.

Let the Kolb questions be answered later...For now I want the qb that gives the Eagles the best chance of beating the Saints. I go with Garcia, unless he is shot and I can't believe they would have signed him if he were shot. Also I don't think he would have signed here to be a backup. Start Garcia against the Saints and let the rest work itself out later

You're reading too much into this. Confident in Kolb or not, they need a guy who can play until Vick is cleared/McNabb is healthy. Even after that, Vick is more rusty than a screen door from the Titanic.

Let's just hope Mac5 is behind the center come Sunday. Hurt he is a better option than the three other qb's available. This is one of those plans of mice and men that went astray!!! D Mac was not suppose to get hurt in game one. I would like to give Kolb the benefit of the doubt but his performances to date have only increased my doubt. I am not sure he could qb Carolina!!! Garcia knows the system but he is only two days younger than George Blanda was when he retired so arm strength is an issue. Vick has never honed his passing game so he is as accurate as Lidge has been this year. This is not a good situation unless Mac5 is behind the center. Brees is not Del Homie he will bring his A game on Sunday and the Eagles need to match up!

Logic- Garcia has played for the Eagles and has done a great job---- Kolb is erratic- has not shown anything as of yet------ Vick might not be 100% ready- 2 years is a long time to sit------- McNabb will have to sit 3 -4 weeks--------Who else was out there- Pat Ryan?

sheil. yes on #6. if mcnabb cant play kolb is our man. we need a backup. garcia and feeley know our system. feeley is on his way to carolina so we went with jeff. jeff will be cut when / if mcnabb is healthy and vick is back on the active roster. nothing more, nothing less.

You guys are morons. Jeff Garcia isn't gonna compete for the QB job. He's not even here to take Vick's job. Mcnabb is hurt and Vick is suspended. They're taking enough of a shot as is winging it without an emergency No. 3 QB. The only way Garcia stays on the roster is if Kolb sucks it up next game and he gets cut... otherwise Garcia is back out on the street. And if Mcnabb can't go, expect Kolb to start - they signed Garcia as a backup for a couple games, not as anything permanent.

Maybe they realize that Vick can't play qb so they'll keep all 3. I feel much more comfortable with Garcia in there than Kolb and there's no way you turn the keys to the offense over to Vick anytime soon.

How on Earth is an indication of how the Eagles feel about Kolb? What team would go into a game with only one QB?? It's so obviously a matter of numbers rather than a feeling about Kolb. The Eagles may indeed have little faith in Kolb, but there's no way you can gauge that by this move.
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 6:41 PM, 09/14/2009
What kills me is all the guys here and all over the boards proclaiming that they know FOR SURE what Kolb is. That's asinine. The guy has played, what, three-plus quarters of NFL football? And all that came with no practice. I'm not saying he's gonna be any good, just saying that NONE of you KNOW that he's not. QBs can take awhile to develop. Peyton Manning threw like 30 INTs his rookie year. Obviously we need Kolb to be good for at least a couple weeks, so we don't have the luxury of a long develpomental process. At least he's not a rookie and has a few camps under his belt, so you'd expect a little more. And IF Kolb stinks up the joint Sunday, Garcia will be a decent alternative. Like the move.

Interesting. I don't think we have seen enough of Kolb to make any determination of any kind. What, a total of three quarters of play or something? HOWEVER...I do believe that if you want to win the next two games w/o McNabb, Garcia is the best choice. Not a show of confidence for Kolb, but...

The move is simple: it says "we don't think kolb can cut it based on 1/2 of work, Vick is a project, and McNabb may be out for longer than we're admitting" Seems pretty obvious to me.

This tells me McNabb could be out awhile. I can't imagine Garcia coming here for a week or two. Kolb and Vick are not anywhere near the level of McNabb or Garcia. This gives us a chance to win until McNabb gets back. This is the best possible option we had.

My first reaction was WHAT THE F+++K are they doing? Then I remembered that I had been saying all along that it was a mistake to let AJ go when they will need him next season to replace either Vick or McNabb as one of them will have to go, the Eagles can't pay starting QB salary to both of them. Now I get it, AJ sees Vick as #1 QB which means he will never be more than #3 with the Eagles and now was a good time to get away before the possible cap lifting in 2010. Garcia at this point in his career will be happy to be in Philly and doesn't see himself as the starter even though he knows the system here. He could be #2 with Kolb behind Vick him as he matures. Garcia could not come back if he thinks McNabb will be here in the long run.

It's still a shame that Andy wouldn't let Jeff Garcia go for the victory in the NFC Championship Game with no time outs left, instead Andy stubbornly punted at mid-field to the Saints and thought that the former Heisman Trophy winner, Reggie Bush, wouldn't get a first down - c'mon............... I think Andy just didn't want Garcia showing up his boy McChoke.............

Garcia is better than Kolb. Even if he is here for 2 weeks its a good signing. Garcia's money isn't guaranteed and if McNabb has a lingering injury than we need 3 qb's. Kolb is terrible and if you are Garcia a pay check is a paycheck. So that is why he signed here who wouldn't want a pile of money just to play football for a weeks.

This tells me 3 things, and I would be very surprised if this shook out differently: 1. Garcia is the starter until week 5...they decided to hold McNabb out until after the bye week to make sure he heals properly. No need risking further injury this early and with some winnable games on the slate. 2. The team has no confidence in Kevin Kolb other than as strictly a backup, and his days in Philly are done. It was an ill-advised decision to draft him, and this finally brings that to the surface. 3. In no way is Michael Vick going to be ready to QB the team as a starter anytime soon. I think it is a great move given the situation...they are sending a message that they want to WIN...and Kolb is not the answer, nor is risking further injury to Donovan. Garcia can step right in and win.

This says nothing about the FO's faith in Kolb. They NEEDED a backup quarterback, so they signed the best one available. My faith in Kolb, of course, is another question altogether.

Why did Garcia sign with the Eagles? Simple, the man needs a paycheck and Garcia's skills (arm) is not suited for every offense. Why did the Eagles sign Garcia? They needed a backup for the next game if something happens to Kolb, or McNabb's injury takes longer than a week or two to heal. I don't think the Eagles like the idea of Kolb starting more than a couple of games, and Vick is no where near being a starting NFL QB. WHo do the Eagles cut? A wide receiver. Just because receivers are a dime a dozen, that doesn't mean we have to keep a dozen on the roster.

Garcia is simply here to give us a back up QB for the next week. The guy just got cut by two teams that ain't all that good, the Raiders and the Buccaneers. People who think Garcia is all that are delirious he'll be out of here in 2 weeks.

Bullsh*t. Don't get rid of Hank for a temporary QB! Waive one of the other expendable parts. We got Hank for a 3rd rounder at one point and he has outplayed many others on this team. If we are clearing a spot, trade Reggie or K Curtis for a future draft pick and let Hank stay.

Easy to see it if Sal is right and they trade Baskett. List Vick as a WR and he can still operate out of the wildcat which is what they brought him in for in the first place. Gibson gets a chance to develop, the Eagles get a good trade for Baskett who is not going to play that much anyway. The defense plays like it did on Sunday like last sunday all Kolb has to do is manage the game no heroic stuff, if he blows the first half or quarter sit him and bring in Garcia. When 5 comes back if Garcia is playing well Garcia is the 2 Kolb is 3 and 5 is #1 as it should be and we still march down Broad Street in the SUBERBOWL PARADE!!!

Eagles need a backup - 1 healthy qb is not enough. Garcia knows the offense and can step in immediately. But, I will say Kolb is on a shorter leash than he would be if they signed Mike McMahon as the backup. Just a good, smart signing.

Usually like the blog, but several questions tonight: You wonder what this says about the Eagles confidence in Kolb. Actually, it's irrelevant. It's likely the Eagles are going to need another QB this week since McNabb might not play. And even if he did, there's no telling how effective he would be or if he would remain healthy. So the Eagles needed SOMEBODY to be the backup QB this week, even if it's for one week. It might as well be Garcia, who knows the offense, coaches and a lot of the players. Regarding number four... I don't understand why bloggers do this other then to aggravate readers. "In Garcia, Vick and McNabb, will the Eagles become the first team in history to have three Pro Bowl QB's on their roster?" I don't know, will they? Please do some research and let us know definitively. I suppose it's a good question, but since you are smart enough to think of it, please let the readers know. Finally, let's welcome back with open arms, Jeff Garcia's wife Carmella, the ex-Playboy playmate who might be the hottest woman on the face of the planet.

OK, OK...everyone step away from the glue pot before you have no brain cells yet. The Eagles need a body attached to a QB resume for a couple of weeks. They just picked up a once good player who just got cut... by the Raiders... yes, the Raiders! Neither McNabb nor Kolb are threatened here, nor should they be. And just for the record, let's relax about Vick. Those chanting his name forget that his last real game was here in Philly in 2006. He was playing against our second and third stringers and he looked like a high schooler playing against Lombardi's Packers. His career as a QB ended in the 2004 NFC Championship Game. JJ showed the league how to defend against him and he was never consistently effective since. 60/40 McNabb plays this week, 90/10 next week. Now everyone drink some warm milk and get a nap. The hallucinations show you're not getting enough rest.

Reading way too much into it. Before signing Jeff Garcia they had exactly ONE healthy QB. They had to sign somebody. They went with most logical choice of who was available and would be willing to sign a contract that may only be for a week or 2. Jeff Garcia knows the system and is an experienced QB. He is nothing more than an insurance policy. If Kolb were to go down next week as the starter would you want DeSean Jackson playing QB? I don't think so. This was an excellent pick up for all parties, except maybe Kolb who could get the hook if he plays poorly against the Saints.

Sheil, the only reason the Eagles signed Jeff Garcia is because they don't have a backup QB this week due to Michael Vick's suspension. I think Garcia will be on the roster for a few weeks until Donovan McNabb is healthy. The Eagles are fortunate to have a week 4 bye so that McNabb has time to get healthy. Kevin Kolb probably has 2 starts to prove that he can be an effective NFL QB. I think it is the responsibility of his coaches to put him in a position to succeed, with plenty of running plays and quick, high-percentage passing plays. If the defense continues to be dominant, all that Kolb has to do is not lose the game.

Tremo12 I Agree there are quite a few "nerds/turds" on here but Kevin Kolb so far has stunk the joint up, there's nothing exciting about this kid, and he looks like he's running in heavey sand. I for one don't like to hate on anybody, but I don't think he has the juice at all. Go birds!

if kolb starts he has a big game...the offense is too good and he is not as bad as most think...garcia is simply insurance at this point...

I agree with JSaq. You're reading too much into this. After being released by Oakland, no one seems interested in Garcia (age, etc.) If he get the opportunity here, it raises his stock, even after being released when we get D back and Vick is off suspension...nothing more. Good move for the Eagles...good move for Garcia...and Andy is not that complex...

Hey, Is Koy Detmer still around? Maybe they can sign him. ( That was a joke.) I think Garcia is just here to pick up a pay check for a couple of weeks. Point 6 above is the closest to reality.

Stat of the week, Kolb first 16 passes 6 turnovers, Peyton Manning first 16 passes 6 turnovers. I hope Kolb starts maybe the next two games, see what he has. The Eagles have a big decision coming up in a year or two. Stay with McNabb will be 34-35 years old, Vick 3 years younger and then Kolb 8 years younger than McNabb; times are going to change in a year or two. Garcia should just retire.

This easily the greatest gathering of stupidity in the intellectual void that is Philly.com comments. If TB and Oakland cut this guy does he have anything left? He will only play if Kolb's arm falls off.

Although I have never been impressed with Kolb I think we will all be surprised when he plays fairly well (I mean, keeps us in the game) on Sunday. We will need Asante or Macho to return a pick for 7 to win it though.

It's just an insuance policy. If McNabbs not dressed then they'll need a second qb for one week. If Kolb stinks or gets hurt, maybe longer.

i think your point #6 is spot on, unfortunately. the simplest explanation is usually the correct one (occam's razor, sorry- no place for that in a football column). if kolb were not a second round pick, he would have been cut before feeley. as he is a second rounder, he's here for the season, and as soon as dmac is really back (week 5?), garcia likely goes, unless one of the other qbs is hurt, or garcia gets a chance and lights it up. still makes sense for garcia- a potential showcase, a nice check, a comfortable situation, an adoring fanbase- what's not to like?

Andy blew this draft choice when he picked Kolb in the 2nd round. He has been a huge dissapointment. Cut Kolb and keep Garcia.

"What happens when McNabb gets healthy? Some were already worried that the fans would be calling for Vick. But now adding Garcia to the mix takes it to a different level." Who cares what a bunch of knucklehead WIP callers think? Seriously. All that chatter has nothing do with what happens on the field.

Doesn't really matter be/c once Vick can play he'll take over...then the Eagles can really run that WILDCAT with all that speed and talent they've got...Vick, Westbrook, Jackson & Maclin will be a nightmare for any defense in the NFL

***** QUESTION FOR ANYBODY***.. Can Michael Vick be designated as a RB and Quarterback at any time? (Meaning that the Eagles could carry McNabb, Garcia, Vick, and Kolb, without designating Vick as the 3rd QB). ^5

Kold is horrendous, the eagles always think they know something about a player that no one else knows...thats why they draft guys from WHEATON COLLEGE and nonsense like that... week 2 should be a proven vet, not this toss up.

You cant stay Kolb is horrible he's never had a chance to prove himself. He's been here about 3 yrs and has only played what a total of maybe 3 or 4 quarters in the NFL in his career so far and it wasnt even in the same game that he played all that. All you people that say he sucks are ridiculous and know nothing about football or sports in general. How the heck can you possibly judge someone from that? No one steps in immediately at QB and just plays great from the get go. It takes time. His 1st experience was ridiculous. You dont throw a guy thats never played a single down into a situation like the one against Baltimore and then expect him to be effecient? They were getting destroyed. That wasnt a fair 1st shot. And he hasnt really played since then. Come on people, for a sports town thats supposedly really knowledgable especially when it comes to football there are alot of clueless morons out there

You mean to tell me that we couldn't even get a 7th round pick in 2020's draft? How the heck did we get a 5th for Greg Lewis? Joe Banner should get an award for getting a 5th for Greg Lewis, hopefully Kanye West doesn't steal his award when Banner gets it lol
    Nothing but the truth
