No Spags, now what?

Steve Spagnuolo won't be returning to Philadelphia.

The former Eagles assistant iis headed to New Orleans to become the defensive coordinator of the Saints, according to Jay Glazer of FoxSports.com.

So what does this mean for the Birds?

The immediate question is: Will Juan Castillo return as Andy Reid's defensive coordinator? Or will Reid look elsewhere to replace him?

We haven't heard from Reid since the team's season ended in Week 17 against the Redskins. The assumption was that he would get his staff in order before addressing the media. If Castillo is coming back, my guess is we could hear from Reid soon. If Reid stays silent, he may be exploring other options.

Earlier this month, I compared Castillo and Spagnuolo. And I concluded that Spagnuolo was the more attractive option because winning a Super Bowl means beating the likes of Aaron Rodgers and/or Drew Brees. Spagnuolo built a gameplan that limited Tom Brady when the Giants won the Super Bowl.

It's difficult to know what Castillo is capable of. The defense played well at times last season, but lacked consistency. And even Jeffrey Lurie admitted it would be a mistake to put too much stock into what happened in the final four weeks.

When Reid made Castillo his defensive coordinator last offseason, it was clear that the decision was his, and his alone. We'll find out soon enough what Reid decides for 2012, which could be his final season as the team's head coach.
