McGlynn, Kolb and the offense

The Eagles were back at it on Saturday morning, practicing in full pads at Lehigh. Here are the observations:

* As I mentioned earlier, starting center Nick Cole left practice with a knee injury, giving Mike McGlynn a chance to run with the first-team offense. The team did not hit this morning, but it didn't appear that McGlynn and Kevin Kolb bothced any snaps, and McGlynn drew praise for his blocking on one run play from offensive line coach Juan Castillo.

After practice, he was asked about the rotating bodies along the offensive line. Only Winston Justice and Jason Peters have been out there for all the practices.

"You know what? The more and more you play together, obviously the better the guys are going to get as a unit," McGlynn said. "But we're paid to play the position. You're expected to get in there and don't lose a step."

* On one play, Kolb threw a perfect pass, hitting Riley Cooper on an inside route to beat Ellis Hobbs. On the very next play, Kolb looked for Brent Celek in the middle of the field, but Quintin Mikell read the play beautifully and picked him off. Back-to-back plays that are probably pretty indicative of what to expect from Kolb in his first season as a starter.

* Kolb threw a pair of interceptions, but Andy Reid indicated that the picks are not always Kolb's fault, and the receivers sometimes need to fight the defensive backs for the ball. You can read that one of two ways: Either he's telling the truth, or he's sticking up for his young quarterback.

* The battle for the second tight end position continues. Today, I noticed Cornelius Ingram joining Brent Celek in two tight-end sets with the first unit on run plays. It'll be good to see how Ingram and Clay Harbor perform in the first preseason game.

* Castillo liked what he saw from Max Jean-Gilles on a run play where he blocked Brodrick Bunkley to the ground. Castillo ran over to MJG after the whistle and patted him on the helmet.

* Trevor Laws continued to make plays this morning. It's been Laws and Daniel Te'o-Nesheim taking the inside spots in the Eagles' first-team nickel defense. I haven't seen Darryl Tapp getting any of those reps the last couple days.

* The Eagles lined up in a special formation during the red-zone portion of practice. Not sure if it was straight Wildcat, but LeSean McCoy lined up in the shotgun, and Kolb was out wide to rht right as a receiver. McCoy took the snap and ran up the middle.

* The old shovel pass (a long-time Reid favorite) needs some fine tuning. Kolb's dish to McCoy in the red zone fell incomplete.

* Other notable plays: Hank Baskett beat Ellis Hobbs for a touchdown; Kolb hit Jason Avant for a touchdown, beating Joselio Hanson; and Michael Vick threw a nice deep ball to Baskett, who beat Geoff Pope.

* I'm not sure if Tracy White is going to make the team, but he likes getting his hits in. White has a tough time holding up and avoiding contact in the non-hitting portions of practice.

* If I had to name an early favorite for biggest BROmance on the 2010 Eagles, it'd be Stewart Bradley and Ernie Sims. The two linebackers are around each other after every play.
