'Joe Buck Live' gets edgy

POSTED: Monday, June 15, 2009, 10:41 PM

I'll admit it.

I tuned in to Joe Buck's new HBO show tonight. I thought it would probably be good for some blogging material, considering he was slated to have Brett Favre, Chad Ochocinco and Michael Irvin as guests.

And I was right.

For awhile, it went pretty much as I expected.

Favre came on, and while he didn't flat-out say he will be playing for the Minnesota Vikings in 2009, anyone who was paying attention could tell he is coming back. Favre said he needs to see how his arm heals after surgery, but barring a setback there, expect him to be in Minnesota.

Then there was Irvin and Ochocinco. Nothing huge to report with them. They talked about the show's theme, 'Athletes and celebrity,' but didn't really break any new ground.

Which led to the final 12 minutes or so. Buck had on actor Paul Rudd, comedian Artie Lange and Jason Sudeikis from Saturday Night Live.

Lange dropped profanity after profanity, mocking Buck for saying his favorite Web site was TMZ.com.

He continued, making fun of Tony Romo for his last name and saying his girlfriend Jessica Simpson now resembled Chris Farley.

Buck and the other two tried to play along, but it made for pretty awkward TV, at least from my perspective.

"Sorry to ruin your [expletive] great show," Lange said at one point.

"I appreciate the apology 'cause you have," Buck responded.

Lange made a couple other off-color jokes, and Buck tried to play it off at the end, thanking the guests, "including the guy who just ended my show after one try."

So, did anyone else see this? Was it all part of the act?

If so, Buck had me fooled. He looked genuinely perturbed by Lange's antics.

Very bizarre to see the guy who once went nuts on Randy Moss for his mooning celebration (video below) laugh along and try to play it cool when Lange was cracking jokes. I kept waiting for him to say, "That is a disgusting act Artie Lange!"

And believe me, there were plenty of opportunities to do so.

Also, it made me wonder what kind of effect this will have on his broadcast career. Even if Romo's a good sport and has heard it all, that meeting with Buck and Aikman during the season before they call a Cowboys game is going to be a little bit awkward for sure.

Chime in with your thoughts.

Update: The video of the Buck/Lange segment is on YouTube. Warning: As described above, the language is colorful to say the least, and the content may be offensive to some.

It's difficult to understand why he had that washed up dirtball on his show. I guess he asked for it and he got it.

I don't know who to blame more, Artie Lang for being a fat, unfunny tool who embarrassed himself more with each word, or Buck and his producers for having him on in the first place? Lang is a wannabe Belushi with less than half the talent and a longer life span.

Artie is amazing and he was hilarious. Joe Buck is a joke and he needed Artie to make his show bearable. He has a best selling book and is an integral part of the most popular radio show on all of satellite radio. Plus he routinely holds benefit shows for unfortunate people, including bar owners in the Delaware Valley that were ripped off by Captain Janks. Sounds like a washed up dirtball to me. Please, Artie, continue to make all of us laugh and stay off the smack.

Artie was clearly the funniest act on the show. The Favre interview was tired..nobody cared what OCHOCINCO had to say, and Joe Buck was clearly not in his element in this type of venue.

It was funny. But I think it was planned. The segment with Artie was supposedly live - then at the end of it, they ran a taped segment where Buck basically read a closing statement (You knew it was taped because Buck "tossed" to it from the couch, and then suddenly he was standing in a separate location). Anyway, at the end of this taped segment Buck made the comment about how Artie just ended his show. If this segment was taped in advance, Buck would have had to know that Artie was going to do something supposedly shocking.

Hahahaha! Just watched it again. Artie was the only thing even remotely entertaining about the show. Joe Buck is terrible.

I happened to turn on just before the panel. Artie was downright hilarious! Everything he said and did was funny. Joe Buck was completely outmatched. Artie absolutely killed him. You could see the uneasiness on Joe's face when Artie was talking about Jack Buck. Joe was just waiting for Artie to say something bad. Nothing but praise for him, though. The closing remarks thing Joe did was absolutely brutal. Hope this is the one and only episode. The guy is such a turd.

I was dying during Artie's rants! If it was staged, Joe Buck sure can act because he looked down right miserable during that thing. I will be thinking of Artie's bit every time I watch the Cowboys this season.

If you go to http://www.hbo.com/joebucklive and click the Overtime link they have about 7 and half more minutes of them going back and forth (Joe actually gets a few words in).

Artie didn't ruin that show, he saved it. It was completely worthless until he walked on the set. Joe Buck is an uptight loser and a bad announcer.

I always had Buck pegged as an uptight kind of guy, so I couldn't believe it when I heard that Artie Lang was going to be one of his writers. That combination makes absolutely no sense. Artie can be funny when he's in his element, but 'Joe Buck Live' is not his element. As for Joe, he may think he's funny, and he may be around his friends, but as far as being funny enough to do a comedy show? No way. Stick to sports Joe.
