Hasselbeck, the Seahawks and Kolb

All offseason, we've discussed potential landing spots for Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb.

When the draft came and went, the list of teams shrank considerably.

But two teams that still made sense were the Seahawks and the Cardinals, neither of which selected a quarterback.

And while Seattle could still be in the mix whenever teams are allowed to make moves, a report today from ESPN's Adam Schefter says they might decide to bring veteran free agent Matt Hasselbeck back instead.

A league source tells Schefter that Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell called Hasselbeck during the brief period when the lockout was lifted and told him how much the team wanted him to return.

Does this mean Hasselbeck is definitely going back to Seattle and that the Seahawks are out of the running for Kolb? Of course not. Seattle, like the rest of the league, would probably like to have options once the free agency/trading period begins.

Hasselbeck turns 36 in September and is coming off a year in which he threw 12 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. In the last three years, he's tossed 34 touchdowns and 44 interceptions in 35 games.

Last offseason, Seattle swapped second-round picks with the Chargers and also gave up a third-rounder for QB Charlie Whitehurst. He compiled a 65.5 QB rating in limited action last year, but at 28, is a younger option than Hasselbeck.

Schefter suggests the Cardinals would be "more determined than ever" to land Kolb if the Seahawks brought Hasselbeck back. I'm not sure how much I buy into that. If Arizona were competing with Seattle for Kolb, I would think they would be just as determined to land him and keep him away from a division rival.

With that being said, the Cardinals continue to make sense as a potential trading partner.

Earlier Tuesday, I wrote about Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb and the deep ball.

At this point, anything less than a 1st round pick for Kolb is going to upset the fans. Cromartie and a 3rd round pick exciting anyone? Me neither.

I do not think "they" will start caring about what the fans think.

Yea @dragoon6, I keep hearing Cromartie. But, is he worth a middle first round pick? I'm thinking maybes he's worth a 2nd. Maybe Cromartie and the Cardinal's 2nd round pick next year. THEN, with the money saved by not signing Asawhatshisname, we sign two solid FA pass rushers.

Name two solid FA pass rushers. Asomugha is the way to go if possible.

So Seattle would rather resign their 36 year old QB rather than trade for the "Savior". Hmm, hopefully they stay stupid in Zona.

Hasselbeck would be a good backup QB for Vick. He knows the WCO and I don't think anyone is going spend any money for him to be a starter. Trade Kolb to the Cards and sign Hasselbeck as the backup QB.

I had posted last week when a story ran about teams interested in Kolb, that Seattle was my dark horse pick, due to the fact they only have Whitehurst under contract at the QB position.

If Arizona is dumb enough to give up Peterson for one lame #4, no doubt that they would give up Fitzgerald and Peterson for me.

Newsflash: No team is going to give up a 1st round pick for Kevin Kolb. Salary-wise it doesn't even make sense considering Kolb will want at least Cassel numbers. Kolb will be holding the clipboard on the Eagles sidelines this year, that's a guarantee. There is zero motivation for the Eagles to trade him below their asking price, which will be too high for Seattle, Arizona, Miami, or anyone else. Kolb will be an Eagle. Simple.

soLoopy: Why is Kolb smug? All he's done since he's been here is play good soldier.

Hasselback is a INT machine and Kevin would be an upgrade for the Seahawks, but IMO Kevin is a perfect fit for the Arizona Cardinals and Larry Fitzgerald,i hope KK can get away from Big Red ASAP before he totally ruins KK's career...i'll bet sloopy never took a snap behind center in his/her life...
