Fitzgerald: I never pushed for Kolb

A month ago, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald had urged management to pursue Kevin Kolb this offseason.

Fitzgerald is entering the final year of his contract, and Cardinals quarterbacks had a combined 60.5 rating last season, 31st in the NFL. Arizona had just 10 touchdowns through the air all year.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt later downplayed the report, saying the coaches and management always seek input from players, and that this was no different.

Kolb, meanwhile, said he was flattered.

"I mean, if he's not the best, he's one of the best receivers in the NFL, superstar," he said during a radio interview on WIP. "For a guy like that to say something about me, it means a lot. And it's awfully flattering, and I hope that if something happens, their name comes up."

But now, Fitzgerald is denying the initial report.

Here's what he told WCNN in Atlanta when asked if he got into any trouble for saying he'd like to have Kolb in a Cardinals uniform (via sportsradiointerviews.com):

"No, because I didn't," Fitzgerald said. "I never said anything about what I wanted. As a player, we don't really have too much say so, if any, about what we want. We are just out there playing ball, we are paid to do our jobs and that is pretty much what they expect us to do. So I really don't have any idea who is going to be out quarterback and to be honest with you I just want to win and whoever is going to helps us do that I am all for it."

Of course, Fitzgerald would have little incentive to make those comments about Kolb publicly at this point, considering a potential trade might be virtually impossible, depending on what happens with the CBA.

Even though that's the case, Kolb's future continues to be discussed frequently at the national level.

Schefter Tweeted yesterday that at least three teams are discussing dealing for Kolb.

And Eric Williams, who covers the Seahawks for the Tacoma News Tribune, was asked in a chat yesterday whether a move for Kolb was realistic for Seattle.

Here's what he wrote:

Well, I know they were interested in Kolb last year, so that leads me to believe they will make a run after him again. If the cost is too prohibitive, then that opens the door for another free agent quarterback should they not bring Hasselbeck back.

Gregg Rosenthal over at Pro Football Talk thinks Seattle might be the best fit for Kolb.

THOUGHTS ON WESTBROOK

On Monday, I wrote about Brian Westbrook's recent comments that he'd love to return to the Eagles.

Now that I've thought about it for a two day, some things to add.

Some of you brought up the notion of Westbrook as a third-down back. That only works if they plan on taking LeSean McCoy, Jason Avant or Brent Celek off the field in those sets.

Given McCoy's success, I think you want him on the field as much as possible. And Avant and Celek can be nice weapons on third down too. Celek had 13 catches on third down last year, averaging 13.1 yards per reception. And Avant had 15 catches for 201 yards on third down, averaging 13.4 yards per reception.

The one part that makes sense is that Westbrook knows protections and has a good relationship with McCoy. McCoy Tweeted yesterday:

That would b great if my big bro @brianwestbrook20 came back to Philly

Again, I think Westbrook's return is unlikely. I'm sure the Eagles would like to bring Jerome Harrison back, but if that doesn't happen, they're probably more likely to find McCoy's backup elsewhere.
