Eagles steal one from 'Skins

POSTED: Sunday, November 29, 2009, 4:21 PM

With 11:42 remaining in the fourth quarter, the mood at Lincoln Financial Field couldn't have been gloomier.

The Eagles, nine-point favorites, trailed the Redskins, 24-16. And DeSean Jackson was out of the game with a head and neck injury.

But for the second week in a row, the Birds rallied late and somehow came away with a 27-24 win to remain one game behind the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East race.

Donovan McNabb led the Eagles on a pair of touchdown drives, after the offense looked out of sync for the first three quarters.

With Jackson sidelined, Jason Avant came up with a pair of big catches, one for 46 yards and another for 20. Just when it looked like the drive would stall at the 1-yard line, Eldra Buckley punched it in for the touchdown with 7:24 left.

On the two-point conversion, the Eagles went to the often-used shovel pass as McNabb flipped it to McCoy, who gave a great effort to tie the game at 24.

After the defense got a stop, the Eagles put together another drive, going 66 yards on 10 plays to set up a David Akers 32-yard field goal, his fourth of the game, which gave the Eagles the 27-24 win.

This was your classic glass half-full/glass half-empty game.

On one hand, there were a number of miscues -- the onsides kick, the penalties, the third-down defense. The Eagles were big-time favorites against a 3-7 Redskins team that was depleted by injuries, and they were lucky to come out on top.

On the other hand, the Eagles were banged-up also, and they put together a fourth-quarter comeback for the second week in a row.

At 7-4, they are in great position as they travel to Atlanta to take on the Falcons next week.

So I'll let you all chime in below with your take on the game. Gutsy, comeback win that shows character? Or ugly, lucky win that means nothing because this team's going nowhere?

Back with more after the press conferences.

say what you want, 7-4 is 7-4. A win is a win is a win.

This win maybe ugly, however, it's a game the Eagles in the past always seemed to lose. Raggedy Andy still sucks!

Good win. The skins always play us tough, but it was good to see the birds' offense gut it out at the end. Leonard Weaver was a great pickup, we wouldn't have won this one with out him. Does anyone else think Jason Avant is the most under-rated receiver in the game??

7-4 should be 9-2. This team is going nowhere. Weak teams look good against the Eagles. Good teams dominate us. Time for a major shake-up. Reid has the same philosophies and the same playbook he came to town with - not bad, but tired and not good enough. This is the first year I have stopped defending Reid and McNabb and have become skeptical of their ability to become a winner. After 11 years, they have stopped getting better. Injuries are no excuse - everyone has injuries this time of year.

A win is win at this point in the season when you're trying to keep pace in the playoff hunt. Terrible play call AR, on the onside kick to start the game. Why give a struggling offense a chance at possibly having good field position?

That's two weeks in a row - difficult wins against clearly weaker opposition. Yeah, the wins are always welcome, but unless this team tightens up - both offensively and defensively - it isn't going far in the play-offs. Special kudos to McCoy for his bigtime effort on the 2 point conversion. And it's reassuring to have Akers, once again, among the elite kickers in the league.

Love the wins. Don't love how they're coming. Oh well. Don't matter how ya win, I guess. Just not as pretty. I think I'll live.

Morningwheg still called a lousy game. Poor choices on a first and goal in the first half. Three straight 3 and outs in the 3rd quarter, followed by another poor possession ending with an interception. Think they'll get away with this next week?

At least we didn't repeat the Oakland Experience! It was looking that way in the 3rd quarter when the 'Skins made adjustments and we..... we didn't.

Eagles wins despite Reid's self destructive game plan to start with onside kick and give up 7 points!

So a month ago it was Andy has a great winning percentage but can't win close one. Well now he's won two close ones in a row...are you happy???!!!

Andy's winning percentage is indisputable. But his foolish calls can be disputed; giving 7 points to a team that could not score 7 in 60 meeting is foolish, when your offense runs smoothly you put in Vick for nothing, .... what is going on...

amazing. they finally get a 4th quarter comeback and the headline says they "steal one." I'm as big a critic as any but give them a break.

Honestly, did the Eagles "steal" the game? Seems to me that they dominated when the game was on the line. We're unimpressed when they win big, devastated when they lose and dissapointed when they win close.
