UPDATE: It's Comcast vs AIG for 'worst co.' at Consumerist

POSTED: Tuesday, May 5, 2009, 3:38 PM

UPDATE: With 251,000 votes to date, it's now "Comcast vs. AIG" for the title "Worst Company in America" at the Consumers Union's www.consumerist.com. Comcast (cable TV) was runner-up to Countrywide (mortgages) last year, but Comcast got more bad votes than Countrywide successor Bank of America in an "upset" during last night's semi-finals, while AIG got more hits than Ticketmaster. Voting continues; Worst will be named Thursday.

YESTERDAY: "It’s the bailouts versus the monopolies!" writes Consumerist, the Consumers Union-owned, nonprofit, ad-free Web site, in the latest edition of its yearly "Worst Company in America" competition. This year's “final four” are Bank of America, Comcast, Ticketmaster and AIG.

"Ticketmaster and Comcast drew the ire of voters because they were viewed as monopolies that consumers were forced to deal with," said Meghann Marco, Consumerist.com, in a statement, while "AIG and Bank of America paved their way to the final four with exorbitant executive compensation packages, reckless management, and taxpayer bailouts... One of these disastrous companies will go on to join Halliburton (2006), RIAA (2007) and Countrywide (2008) as 'The Worst Company in America'.”

The four are survivors of a field that also included accused poisoner-by-negligence Peanut Corp. of America, Comcast rival Verizon, credit card giant Capital One, and failing carmakers General Motors and Chrysler, among others. Consumerist's unscientific voting concludes May 7.

That means that COMCAST has the honor of the 2 years running of being in the Final Four of Worst Company. Good reputation to have Comcast! Yeah - if they weren't a monopoly - Comcast might actually have to provide better Customer Service and Better pricing. Congratulations Comcast - on being a Worst finalist - 2 years in a row.

I'm still waiting for Comcast to release Comcast Sportsnet to other providers. Its ridiculous that they are the only company who carry our home team sports.

What's really ridiculous is that Philly is the only market where they are allowed to withhold CSN from other providers. We ditched them years ago for DirecTV and NFL Sunday ticket.

It really is ridiculous that they have the rights over CSN. That channel, along with the fact that FiOs isn't available in my neighborhood, is the only reason I have comcast.

AIG is winning right now - but Comcast has to feel great about being a Finalist for Worst - and for the comments about Comcast's lack of customer service and its monopoly pricing. I vote Comcast for the win - for Worst!

finkj don't worry FIOS has all the channels except that CN8 so you do miss a few games.

Having no choice but Comcast, I am stuck being nickle and dimed by this money grubbing company. HDTV choices are limited, they won't provide the NFL Network as a basic channel, they are out to limit my internet usage, and they have terrible customer service. To top it off, they are miserable failures as owners of two Philly sports teams. Fortunately, looks like I will have the Verizon option in the near future, and when I do, its goodbye to this terrible company.

Comcast IS a MONOPOLY - in many other states you have a choice between CABLE PROVIDERS. The dish blows - doesn't work when it's raining, snowing or just real cloudy. Get real.
