New Hampshire cornerback commits to Penn State

Jake Kiley, a defensive back from New Hampton (N.H.) School who can play several positions, has given an oral commitment to Penn State.

Jake Kiley, a 6-foot-2, 173-pound defensive back from New Hampton (N.H.) School who can play several positions, has given an oral commitment to Penn State.

The decision Tuesday by Kiley gives the Nittany Lions a total of 13 commitments thus far to the freshman Class of 2012.

Kiley told ESPN.com that Penn State became his No. 1 school after his visit last fall to Happy Valley, which included the Lions' game against Michigan State.

"That was when I really got a taste of what Penn State is about," he told the web site. "What was important to me in the process was picking a school that was solid academically and athletically. Penn State has a great mixture of both."

Connecticut, Boston College, Duke and Virginia also expressed interest in Kiley but had not offered him a scholarship. Kiley's other scholarship offer came from New Hampshire, a Football Championship Subdivision school, but he jumped at the Penn State offer when it came Monday night.

"It would have been crazy not to take the offer," he said.

Kiley plays quarterback and defensive back for New Hampton, which is coached by his father, Ed Kiley. He is more likely to play defensive back or wide receiver at Penn State, which told him he was being recruited as an "athlete."
