Backup QB's essay on JoePa wins contest

Backup quarterback Shane McGregor has won a $5,000 scholarship for an essay he wrote about his coach, Joe Paterno.

Penn State backup quarterback Shane McGregor has won a $5,000 scholarship for an essay on Joe Paterno that he submitted for a contest sponsored by the Jim Murray Memorial Foundation.

The contest, held in honor of the late columnist for the Los Angeles Times, asked entrants to write a profile about someone on their campus who is influential in the sports community. The assignment was an easy one for McGregor, who carries a 3.89 grade-point average as an English and journalism major.

"When you have Joe Paterno as your coach, it's pretty clear," said McGregor, of Ebensburg, Pa., a senior who is on schedule to graduate in December.

McGregor was one of five winners nationwide.
