Bill Iezzi: Watch for this Wrestler

If you enjoy watching heavyweight wrestlers go at it, keep an eye on Paul VI freshman Gregg Webb this weekend at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The tough-minded freshman is aiming for nothing less than a gold medal at the state tournament and he very well could win one.

Webb, who weighs 265 pounds, advanced to the state tournament by placing third in the Region 7 consolation final after he pinned Seneca senior Nigel Gray in 2:53.

Webb (19-6) beat Cinnaminson senior Mike Dwyer, 3-2, in an ultimate tiebreaker last Tuesday. Friday he lost to Haddonfield senior Nick Conquest, 3-2, in an ultimate tiebreaker quarterfinal then defeated Northern Burlington’s Cody Melton, 3-2, in a wrestleback to get to the consolation final.

Asked what his secret is for beating older, heavier, more experienced heavyweights, Webb said: “It’s my mindset. I don’t want to be beaten.”
