Gov. Chris Christie had secret weight-loss surgery in February. He says for his family. Right.
The big news isn't that Gov. Chris Christie had weight-loss surgery in February, as the Inquirer's Matt Katz and Christie Chronicler reports.
No, the big news is that the slightly smaller Big Boy (that's President George Bush's nickname for him) managed to do something and not announce it to the world or have it recorded for posterity by his ever-present court videographer.
Apparently, Christie checked himself into a New York hospital under an alias — Chris Springsteen? Jon Bon Christie? — and told no one, which may be a first.
It was days after the governor went on David Letterman, doughnut in hand, and announced "I'm basically the healthiest fat guy you've ever seen."
Apparently, Mr. Honesty was being less than honest.
"I've struggled with this issue for 20 years," the governor told the New York Post. "For me, this is about turning 50 and looking at my children and wanting to be there for them."
Possibly, but it is also about politics, 2016 and the fact that no large man has been elected president since William Howard Taft in 1909.
Christie has lost about 40 pounds since the surgery. Though his weight is unknown, the Post wrote that estimates range from 300 to 350. The governor even consulted Jets coach Rex Ryan — son of former Eagles coach Buddy Ryan —- about the surgery, who has shed 100 pounds since having the procedure three years ago.
