Gov. Christie and creationism in the schools

Gov. Chris Christie's recent fancy-dancing about whether "creationism" (aka, religion) ought to be taught in New Jersey's public schools reminds me of his earlier ruminations about climate change.

Last week, after an audience member at one of his patented "town hall" productions popped the creationism question, the fleet-footed Christie dodged that "it's really a dangerous area for a governor who stands up from the top of the state to say you should teach this, you shouldn't teach that."

You may recall that at yet another town hall last November, Christie said he was "skeptical" humankind is contributing to climate change.

Both occasions of doubt might suggest an appealing humility on the part of the governor, were it not for the fact that he otherwise appears to entertain few if any second thoughts. Particularly, about anything he wants to do (see: Xanadu).

Consider: According to Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) , Christie's proposed budget would grab some of the state's global warming funds to help pay for the NJ Turnpike-widening project.

PEER claims that "nearly $7 million from the Global Warming Solutions Fund would be taken to support (the) widening project from Interchange 6 to Interchange 9 'to pay for the costs of replanting trees and impacts of the deforestation' from road expansion."

Tapping a green fund to expand one of America's most infamous highways.

Now that's creative.
