Howdy, neighbor

Gay people in the Jersey 'burbs

The number of gay couples living in the North Jersey suburbs has increased by 30 percent since 2000, according to US census data.

Collingswood, Cherry Hill and Gloucester Township are among the 20 most pro-gay communities in New Jersey, as measured by membership in the Garden State Equality organization.

And Prohibition, the gay nightclub at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, is a fabulous hit – with straight women seeking a hip-yet-hospitable venue for bachelorette bashes.

So much for the supposedly "radical" gay agenda.

Like the Glee 3D concert movie, which just defeated Mars Needs Moms for title of 2011's biggest bomb, the traditional right-wing hype about a vast same-sex conspiracy is fizzling at the box office.

It's likely the notion of gays and lesbians as a malevolent "other," plotting nefariousness in some exotic locale, will be an increasingly tough sell as perfectly ordinary female couples  move in next door.

Or when a solid straight citizen of suburbia keeps running into the two guys who live across the street at Home Depot.
