Countdown to Sunday
Things to read as we count the days:
Return of the neck beard! Koy Detmer is back in green to hold for kicker David Akers. The movers have already delivered his playbook and toothbrush.
The NY Daily News reports that the Giants are not looking forward to coach Tom Coughlin.
But neither are they quaking about the rubber match: The Giants are so relieved to get into the playoffs they wouldn't care if they were playing Lombardi's Packers. Fortunately for them, they are not. In fact, as bad as they have played the last two months, perhaps the best thing they have going for them is the lack of a powerhouse team in the NFC. They are not intimidated by playing in Philly in Sunday's wild-card game, even if it's one of the most hostile venues in the NFL. They were greeted there in September with fans mooning the team bus. They then won in overtime after a stunning 17-point fourth-quarter comeback. "We feel we beat them once down there, so why can't we do it again?" fullback Jim Finn said. "We're familiar with them. We know what it takes to beat them." Of course, that was four months ago and the Eagles got even with a 36-22 victory at Giants Stadium two weeks ago.
I'm not predicting anything, but rather thanking the Eagles that I can still watch them for another four games :) Closer we get to April before I have to bear no interesting and good Philly sporting events on TV, the better. Although, I did watch the Flyers win their third in a row, then flipped over to watch the Sixers beat Iverson and the Nuggets right after that. Since I don't watch TV other than Philly sports, it'll be a very frustrating 2 months without the glory of at least a Super Bowl trip :)
Ummm ... sorry Jason, but if you're "not predicting anything", then maybe you shouldn't be thinking about 4 more games? Don't count your Super Bowl trips before they're hatched.
Ummm I was being facetious.
I'm a huge Giants fan, but anyone who remembers how Jeff Garcia decimated the Giants in the 2003 playoffs knows we don't have a chance. One of the most under-rated players in the history of the game.
I'm glad we got Koy again. He shares my attitude. After a while, I'm just like "F@#%@$ it", and his whole appearance just screams that. I can only hope to reach his level of enlightenment. I'm sure he tells the media he's being superstitious when he brings only a toothbrush and playbook on road trips, but really he just said "F#@%@# it" when he got tired of packing sh@%.
True Russ. No one brings this up, even, but during 2004's super bowl season, the Eagles had one game where they almost lost, and had to take it to overtime, if I recall correctly. Pittsburgh beat us, but the Cleveland Browns, lead by Jeff Garcia, gave us a hell of a time.
Subway Series? PAAAALLLLLLLLLEASE! As usual, New Yorkers are high!! The jets are not getting to the Superbowl, but the stinkin' Giants have even less of s chance. Can or will they beat the eagles?? Its surely possible, but they would never get past the Bears. I'd say Dallas has the best chance to beat the Bears, followed by the Eagles. The Bears defense is good, but their offense is a joke. It wouldnt be that hard to beat them 9-0 or even 12-0 at home.
Sorry Jason, but it's hard to tell inflection in print, smiley-face symbols notwithstanding. I see so many Eagles fans getting ahead of themselves, that I wish they would focus a little more on the task at hand than on February 4. The look-ahead is part of the reason we feel so put-upon by the sports Gods when the team eventually loses.
No worries. The longer I hang around, the better everyone can tell when I'm in tongue-in-cheek mode. That aside, I have to admit I have glanced past the Giants once or twice, but that's why they play the games. Eagles were 6.5 point underdogs to Dallas, and it never stopped me from thinking we'd kick their asses. I just have to hope that they won't lose to the Giants because they are pathetic. Manning has that look, ALL THE TIME, of "I wish they would trade me already" and "I should be on a good team". I hate Shockey. Plaxico is getting lazy, but those two really draw my ire.
I share your dislike for the Giants. The best description of Eli Manning came from WIPs mid-day show (can't remember which of them it was): Eli looks like a guy who got thrust unwillingly into the family business. I'm not so sure a good team would make Eli any better. In fact, he may actually make a good team worse. That said, I'll be in Vegas this weekend, and I'm very tempted to lay some money on the birds, because I feel like they should smoke this bunch. But the season, being what it has, and my pessimistic-native-Philadelphian mindset tells me to be careful, lest they rip my heart out again.
