Music With Some Miles On It

Don't know about you, but I'm heading over to the World Cafe Live at noon today for a free concert by the lady who wrote this:

I've been meeting men all over Cleveland - in Parma, in Fairview, Mentor and Willoughby. I know them only by first names: Mo, Nick, Sam, Ron. We meet in parking lots and BP stations, after work and on Sunday mornings. They are for the most part attractive and virile. They are also married, but  I don't care.

They've come to sell me their minivans, and in the world of used vehicles and private sellers having a wife indicates a higher level of responsibility that can make a buyer feel more secure. If you've ever been married you know how little truth there is to that, but it is some comfort a when a guy tells you "This is a great van, my wife loves it, we just need something bigger." He leaves out the part about her breaking down on the interstate.

It's Amy Rigby, from her latest entry in her online diary. She calls it "Driving In Vans With Men," and it's as dry and wry as her music. She's an adult. She sings for adults, grown-up stuff, like the world-weary anthem for the new millennium, "Are We Ever Gonna Have Sex Again?" ("I looked for your id today; seemed that id had gone away.")

I've followed this 46-year-old divorcee with a teenaged daughter since her excellent Diary of a Mod Housewife CD fell into my hands in 1996, and made me want to check out the ex of former dBs drummer Will Rigby.

She's moved around a bit since then, Hoboken to Nashville and most recently back to New York City, where she recorded this years's Little Fugitive. I'm figuring the banter will be as good as the tunes.

Her last name is RIGBY, not RIGSBY.
