American Tunes
Blog Image

Don't know who this MP3 blogger is, but he's been rifling through my itunes library. I just put every one of these tunes on my playlist today as I fire up the chainsaw and celebrate the holiday.

(Doing a few days of over-looked work around the back 40)

Van Morrison's "Almost Independence Day."

Versions of "Fourth of July" by Dave Alvin, Galaxie 500 and X.

The Boss's "Independence Day."

Noice.

I've tossed in some Aimee Mann and Elvis Costello and Billy Bragg and Ray Charles and that patriotic ditty from Team America. What's on your playlist? Some Tom Rapp?

Oh happy day.

Dan, kind of an obscure question, but do you have any idea whatever happened to Rick Allen, who used to have a late night show on WYSP during the eighties? He used to play some great stuff tht I only herd on his show, and he had some nights where he would play what he felt was his patriotic stuff. I would put in a blank tapr and record, but a lot of times the tape ended before he would come on and say what he played. Now these tapes are on their last legs, so to speak. ANything you heard, rumor or not would be appreciated.

I got this from the Kansas State U web site: A native of Detroit Michigan, Rick Allen began performing in clubs and coffee houses at the age of 17. While still in high school he began to write for the legendary Creem Magazine and got his first job in radio as a disc jockey right after graduation. He spent several years in New York as a musician (where he was a member of a band that incuded noted Rock and Roll writer Lester Bangs) and working odd jobs including cab driver, carnival worker, street singer and bouncer. Rick has been living in the Philadelphia area since 1981 where he performs with his band Rick Allen and the Upsetters and has been a disc jockey on WYSP since 1982. As a solo performer he has opened for Randy Newman and Taj Mahal among others and with his band for Nils Lofgren, The Jefferson Starship, Spirit,The Band,Dave Mason, Leon Russell and Booker T and the MGs. He has continued writing, most recently for SonicNet.com and counts as his main influences Roy Rogers, Jack Keruoac,Susan Sontag,Stephen Crane,Muhammed Ali, Little Richard and Suetonius. He is currently working on his book Rock and Roll an Black and White: A Personal History.

Hi Dan I must tell you that I am flattered that you remember the Ricky Mess. I had so much trouble registering this account I probably wouldn't have continued trying if it hadn't been for the nice hings you said. You can still find me on the overnights at WYSP and I hope one day you'll be able t ocatch my band, Rick Allen and the Upstters. We play mostly in Bucks County. I'm also a regular writer for Vintage Guitar Magazine and Blurt Online Magazine. Hope all is well with you and thanks to apresiosi for your post too. Best, Rick Allen
