Walnut Lane Bridge reopens today

The reconstructed Walnut Lane Bridge and roundabout will reopen Tuesday afternoon.

The bridge over the Wissahickon has been closed since April, while the roundabout has been shut down since late August.

The six-span bridge, first opened in 1908, was undergoing a $14.7 million rehabilitation project.

Work included replacing the existing bridge deck with a new concrete deck, resurfacing the roundabout approaches, new sidewalks and other improvements, according to PennDot.

Crews are continuing to construct a new sidewalk on the bridge and make repairs to the concrete arch, PennDot said.

General contractor Buckley and Company, Inc., will also install new street lights and remove the existing temporary structure under the bridge over Forbidden Drive.

The project began last November and is expected to finish in August 2017.

The bridge carries 16,810 vehicles per day.
