I disagree with Rich's assessment that the Eagles are the 2nd best in the conference behind the Bears. I think the comeback win against the Giants has distorted reality for quite a few people. The Eagles have some pretty glaring problems defensively and much of it is due to injuries etc. Things are much different now than they were several weeks ago. For that very reason, I believe that if you line up against Atlanta again you may end up with a different result. The Giant's game should have probably been a loss without the meadowlands miracle. The Saints and the Bears I believe are considerably better teams. And last but not least the Rams. I would give the Eagles the nod here but if the two teams were to play I would be unsure about it. I could see the Sam Bradford/Steven Jackson duo carving up the defense so they would still worry me.

Noob...disagree!! Talk about wins that "should have probably been a loss"...how bout those Bears? They should of lost both games against Detroit (calvin johnson call/ then a BS roughing the passer call let them win both games). Atlanta was beat with Kevin Kolb...the Eagles & the Falcons are both better teams now than they were when they played...but I think Vick gives the Eagles the nod there. The Saints are playing some great ball right now, they may be a tough out. The Rams beating the Eagles...ha that's just laughable.

You talk about the Giants win hiding some glaring problems...but how about the wins against QB's like Peyton Manning, Matt Schaub & Matt Ryan...three of the best in the game. Every team has problems, especially in the NFC..but I think your not giving the Eagles enough credit for being 10-5 right now.

If the Giants aren't in, the Eagles are the number 5 seed, not 2. Hey, this was basically an 8-8 squad that became an exciting 10-11 win team based of some good coaching and dynamic play on offense. We had a fun year, and got more than we had a right to expect. It's playoff time, and the Eagles D ALWAYS shows up small in the playoffs, and this year they don't even have enough healthy bodies to begin with.

"Playoffs?? Playoffs?? You kiddin' me?!!" The Eagles peaked in the fourth quarter against the Giants. Right now, Saints, Falcons, Bears and Packers are all playing much better than the Eagles. And its not going to get any better even with a home game. I had this team at 8-8 and they have grossly exceeded my expectations. I like the youth of this team and the nucleus is there for a good future, but that future does not include this year's playoffs.

About this blog
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com Reach Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com.
