The Andrews Brothers

If Stacy Andrews can play, you get a double-bonus.

The Andrews Brothers

POSTED: Friday, February 27, 2009, 1:07 PM

If Stacy Andrews is a player, the Eagles are in the process of getting themselves a double-bonus -- something they are never likely to admit, not wanting to insult Shawn Andrews, he of the mental-health issues. But when you bring in the brother of Shawn Andrews to play next to him on the offensive line, it is a two-fer -- provided, that is, that Stacy arrives for his physical with a functioning knee, a month or so after surgery.

The Bengals franchised Stacy last year. They're letting him go this year. You always wonder when an NFL team lets go of an offensive tackle because the good ones don't exactly grown on trees. (I mean, imagine how thick the limbs would need to be.)

But there obviously were issues with the Bengals involving the long-term value of a contract for Stacy -- that's usually why you franchise a guy, because the team and the player are in different worlds regarding the player's long-term value. Not being privy to all of the inner working of the Bengals' thinking puts an outsider at a disadvantage. But he was a starting NFL right tackle, and has been for a couple of years. He has the requisite size. The Eagles' biggest flaw in the past has been pro personnel moves in the off-season, but they have reshuffled that part of the department in the last year and this is the first big test.

If Stacy Andrews is a player,  they will be better -- and this is meant with no disrespect to Jon Runyan, who played through more physical crap than just about anybody in his business, and did it forever. And then, on top of that, he has to add some stability to his brother's situation.

If he can play...

Love this signing if he is ready for camp if not then def a huge risk to take. The Brother part of the equation will prove to be invaluable

We franchised LJ Smith, so don't read TOO much into that...

It really should help put the depression issue in the past for Shawn andrews, one would think. However, is Stacy's knee sound? And is Shawn's back now 100 percent? It's been a long time since you guys updated us on that.

It's definately an upgrade "IF" he can play. And yes - it's a double bonus as you say. However, I've never been a fan of bringing in "damaged goods." Look how the Elton Brand situation with the Sixers as an example. Or you can look at "The Freak" being more like "The Meek." Too much "wait and see" for my taste.

Let's not pencil him in at tackle yet. First, Shawn is smaller and more athletic than his brother, so why not move Stacy to guard, especially coming off of an injury. He has the size to deal with Haynesworth, and he played guard at Cinncinati, too. Remember, he wasn't a full-time guard when he was franchised; he played both positions. Also, Reid has floated the idea of moving Herremans to guard. The line could very well be Shawn Andrews and Herremans at tackle and Max Jean-Gilles and Stacy Andrews at guard. Hopefully they re-sign Tra Thomas, which gives them more depth, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if there is some juggling done going into next year.

I meant that the Eagles could move Herremans from guard to tackle

Not to be sentimental but how cool is that to wind up playing sports for a living at the highest level side-by side with your brother. Talk about your childhood backyard dreams come true. I actually see this as a good acquisition in any case assuming he passes physical, but can you imagine how pumped these guys would be on the first snap of the season this fall?

The Bengals stink. Remember when you idiots were happy that the Eagles got Lorenzo Booker and bought it to the sports radio garbage of this great trade. Sports 4 Life said when a 1-15 team wants to part ways with a player, they probably arent very good. FYI - Bengals gave up the third most sacks last year, 51, and had the 4th worst rushing game in the league and averaged 3.6 a carry. I would take a Jon Runyan with no legs then any Bengal O-Lineman

Gordy - good call. Because solidifying the O-line does absolutely nothing to help the QB.

First off, this WILL be a great move for the line, that needs to get younger. Second, gordy, the lineman move would be a big help...and who do you see out there that would be a "quality move"? There is practically nothing out there and the only way to upgrade is through trades...and those take time. Finally Sports4Life, the Bengals whole team stinks. Who is their running back? And name another quality lineman on the team...there isnt one. Plus Fitzpatrick had to come in and play quarterback most of the season and if you look at the tape he holds onto the ball WAY to long...which equals sacks...so do some homework before you complain about a free agent from a bad team.

Nothing like a 300 plus pound mental health insurance policy, who can better deal with Shawn's depression issue other than his big brother, not to mention he's a good O Lineman. I'm sorry to see Big Jon go however, he was a class act and he lights up a room, He in his own words, was chest bump worthy !!

not a bad move if he is healty....we all love big jon but we couldnt depend on a 36 yr old rt comin off microfracture surgery...in 2007 when the bengals franchised andrews they only gave up 17 sacks w/ carson palmer hurt teams were able to put 8 in the box and blitz more last yr so the sacks went up and the running game suffered plus add in the fact that cincy didnt have a solid rb either....i know its not pretty but the o-line needed 2 be sured up 1st...with all that said we still need 2 upgrade rb/wr/te positions but guys cant run if there no holes for them to run thru and guys cant catch anything if the qb doesnt have time......

Wonder what this will do to our draft board. Might not need to use a first rounder on an offensive lineman. Maybe we could afford to trade one of those 1st rounders for some help for McNabb. please let it be boldin!!!!!!!

I've never played pro sports with any of my three brothers, so I don't now for sure what this signing (if Stacy A. is healthy) will do for Shawn A. But I do know that undertaking a task with your brother makes it a lot more fun and gives you extra motivation to man up and succeed. It's cool how a good brother both supports and challenges you. Let's hope that's what happens here.

Here we go again! Eagles management letting Dawkins go and tricking and tripping with irregular, imperfect damaged goods level trading. Banner, Heckert, Reid are poor talent evaluators and chemistry alchemists. Pray for us!

"Sports4Life" There is a lot more to it than the O line. There quarterback holds the ball to long and they don't have a good RB. Those numbers can get pretty lop sided, not to mention that you can't put it on one man, speaking of idiot!

goordy & dj - did you guys just write that making the O-line better is not helping Don??? - I always hung my hat on the fact that Birds fan were smarter than most average fans - you guys from Philly? - don't get me wrong - they need to upgrade in lots of places, but come on O-line was/is top of list of needs and by FAR the biggest "help" for our QB

it's a shame brown signed with the rams , he would have been a nice additional piece to the o-line. if they fix the o-line in FA those high picks can be used to supply weapons to Kolb . McSoup will be traded on draft day and the re-tooled O will be off and running. All the doom and gloomers will be gathering up their pitchforks and torches ... as usual.

Drop the negativity Rich. All your "ifs" clearly show you know nothing about Stacy. He's as good as Shawn. Great move for the Eagles but defense will drop a notch without Dawkins.

The O-Line is what needs attention and this is a good start. Too bad Brown wouldn't talk to us but that's the way it goes sometimes. Let's get a couple of studs in the draft and keep the new blood flowing into the line. With an improved O-Line maybe we will be ABLE to run the ball now (and you idiots thought it was play calling)and that WILL help the QB. Now we need a couple of RB's (full and half)to keep this rebuilding of the running game complete.

Why do people think that putting his brother on the line next to him will magically cure his depression? Depression is a physical ailment. If Shawn had a bad back, would putting his brother on the line next to him improve his back??? Oh yeah - Shawn does have a bad back...
