GOP candidate to take on Brady
Featherman to take on Brady
Miriam Hill
John Featherman is not easily deterred. As a rebel in the city's GOP who did not have his party's blessing to run for mayor, he ran anyway and very nearly beat party nominee Karen Brown in the primary.
Now, Featherman has decided to take on Bob Brady, the head of the city's Democratic party and congressman for the first district. Brady will have the city's Democratic machine behind him, and he's held the office since 1998.
Featherman, a Realtor, said that among the reasons he wanted to run was a story by Inquirer reporter Bob Warner that Brady invited judicial candidates to an October meeting at which Democratic party treasurer Frank Oliver told the group that they had to contribute $10,000 each or lose support from party ward leaders. Brady was not present when Oliver said that and later said no one would lose support if they did not raise the money.
Featherman says he will officially announce his candidacy at a Republican City Committee meeting Thursday.
Featherman and Brady have at least one thing in common. Brady, too, ran for mayor and lost - in 2007. Oh - and Featherman took on Brady for his Congressional seat in 1998. Brady garnered 81 percent of the vote.

great news! I've met Bob brady one time in my life, and ever since that meeting, when I've seen his name listed as a power player, I have thought to myself...this is who "runs" Philadelphia? If we're stuck with a machine run government, give me Daley or at least someone competent. Northeaster
Go Featherman! ejbphila
Commentators: I can promise you this. I will put up a fight. I am sick and tired of my Republican Party being a branch of Bob Brady's Democratic Party. Congressman Brady has a record -- a record of failing the 1st Congressional District, which is the 2nd poorest district in the nation. Brady has been a backbencher, and has not addressed the needs of his constituents. Look for me to engage a very smart and lean campaign -- filled with more "Gaddafi style" videos. I promise you all that this will be a spirited and exciting campaign! featherman
Good for you, Featherman, at least someone got the nerve to run against this slug!! Brady maybe the most powerful Democrat in Pa., but his district, which ranks 2nd poorest in the nation, suffers from his overinflated EGO!!! Dadair1
GAME ON!!!!! Real Deal Philly
Featherman doesn't have a shot, but it should be real interesting. Trident252
John Featherman is a joke this guy has no thoughts of his own he has ran for just about every elected office there is so far. Any day or night of the week you can catch him drinking downtown near 13th street. When you look at him all you see is strings controled by someone else. "Featherman, a realtor" enough said. matthews- Yo Matt Slonaker, I thought you were out of politics, now that you are a house husband (aka unemployed,) and your wife is the purported 33rd Ward leader.

Good luck John. Don't be afraid to speak the truth (no problem there), and pull off this overdue upset! And, I'm pretty sure Featherman doesn't drink at all, so not sure who you are seeing near 13th street Matthews. steve_odabashian- Ditto--Featherman does not drink. Matthew S. has his head up his A**!

GO John "The BetterMan" Featherman tombstone713
Indeed, I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke, I don't take illegal drugs, and I don't abuse prescription drugs. But as my hero Steve Odabashian said, I have no problem speaking the truth. I very well know the odds in running as a Republican in any Congressional race in Philadelphia. But I've never been one to allow the odds prevent me from doing the right thing and fighting for those that have been let down by Bob Brady's backbenching over the past dozen years. featherman
John u mite be the rite guy but u have no chance going against the don the commodore
I can't wait for Brady to walk the Specter trail. TheShadowKnows
brady is emblematic of everything thats wrong with Phila politics. A machine guy who is not interested in anything but keeping the machine going. In all the years that he has been in congress, can anyone name a piece of legislation he sponsored? Keep all the goons, and government worker union happy.. thats what bob does.. stevejones
