Verizon pushes on in Philly, gives up in Wilmington

While Verizon is still fighting to compete with Comcast to provide cable service in Philadelphia, it has hoisted the white flag in nearby Wilmington.

The company withdrew its application after hitting roadblocks that could not be resolved.

Among them, according to the Wilmington News Journal: "A guarantee that every home in the city would be wired within five years, a good customer-service policy, a sufficient fine structure if various deadlines weren't met, and an acceptable level of live programs produced by community residents."

In Philadelphia, a final vote by City Council is scheduled for as early as this Thursday. If it passes, Verizon's FIOS system could begin service to home here by the end of the year.
