Philly-raised photojournalist Steve McCurry to shoot 2013 Pirelli Calendar

A former war photographer who's arguably captured one of the most iconic images of the 20th Century will shoot the 2013 Pirelli Calendar.

Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reports that American photojournalist Steve McCurry will shoot the 40th annual edition of the elusive, infamous trade publication that's largely known to be gifted in corporate settings. Still confused? It's the calendar with all the naked supermodels cavorting along Caribbean beaches and fields around the world.

Born and raised in Philadelphia and a Penn State alum, McCurry is best known for is his "Afghan Girl," a stunning and haunting portrait of a young refugee girl living in a camp in Pakistan in 1984. Like any profound, evocative photo, "Afgan Girl" tells the greater story of the strife and horror caused by Soviet forces encountered by refugees in the early'80s.

Until the 21st Century, the girl's identity remained unknown, despite McCurry and National Geographic's unsuccessful attempts to locate her. By using biometric technology, experts were able to eventually confirm Sharbat Gula's identity, and her story was shared with the world in 2002.

We share all this because McCurry serves as beacon of hope to photojournalists worldwide.

Needless to say, it's quite a jump, going from photographing Gula to supermodel Karlie Kloss, who's reportedly following in the steps of Kate Moss and baring it all for the Pirelli people.
