On Wednesday, the ever-so-stylish First Lady of France and her husband welcomed a baby girl into the world. When asked the name of the child, President Nicolas Sarkozy stated that he would "allow the mother the pleasure of telling you herself."
On Thursday, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy took to her website to announce the child's name: Giulia Sarkozy. She wrote, "I'm very touched by the numerous messages of congratulations that are coming in since the birth of our little girl Giulia."
The Palace says it will not make an official announcement, but Sarkozy did address the media on Thursday. "All parents can understand the very profound happiness Carla and I feel, and at the same time everyone can understand that this happiness is all the more profound because it is private," he said.
If there's one word to describe this entire pregnancy, "privacy" is it.
43-year-old Carla Bruni-Sarkozy stated in an interview this past year that she would do everything in her power to protect the child from the public and press.
Given the nature of her husband's position, Bruni-Sarkozy was instantly catapulted into the media spotlight when she became first lady. The former supermodel was the subject of rampant speculation after Sarkozy split from his second wife in 2008- only to marry Carla Bruni four months later, while he was in office.
However, despite the rumors, the First Lady has carried herself with elegance and a super sense of style. Note: She is a repeat name on Vanity Fair's International Best-Dressed list. She also has contacts within the realm of fashion from her days of modeling, singing and acting.
At a time when France is struggling with debt, alongside its European neighbors, Bruni-Sarkozy most likely wants to protect her family-- and her husband's political career. According to one cultural expert, a highly-publicized announcement and celebration of the "happy" first family might hurt Sarkozy's chances for re-election.
