Two West Philly schools closed by fire

Both West Philadelphia High School and Henry Lea Elementary School will be closed Tuesday because of the five-alarm fire Monday at an apartment building at 48th and Walnut streets.

"We want to make sure the air quality is OK and that there's no problem (with) the facilities," school district spokesperson Shana Kemp said of the buildings.

West Philly High School, which was used for two hours Monday night as a Red Cross emergency shelter, is located across 48th Street from the apartment building. Henry Lea Elementary is located on Locust Street at 47th.

The district said in a statement that members of its facilities and operations department, along with city officials, are "conducting an assessment of the schools to determine when they may reopen."
