Don’t miss: Tree giveaways, weird waste recycling

Bella Vista Neighbors Association, Bel Arbor Tree Tenders, Hawthorne Empowerment Coalition and Queen Village Neighbors Association in conjunction with TreePhilly, Fairmount Park Conservancy and Wells Fargo are holding a free tree giveaway this Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Palumbo Rec Center in South Philly.

Our lives are inexplicably intertwined with nature, especially trees. Just ask The Lorax. Trees provide us oxygen, absorb pollutants, prevent soil erosion and help conserve water. So, having trees on your property is a win-win for you and the environment, right?

You can nab your very own tree to plant this Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Palumbo Rec Center in South Philly. Bella Vista Neighbors Association, Bel Arbor Tree Tenders, Hawthorne Empowerment Coalition and Queen Village Neighbors Association in conjunction with TreePhilly, Fairmount Park Conservancy and Wells Fargo are holding a free tree giveaway!

"Trees are a great way to bring natural beauty and wildlife that enriches the environment," said Claudia Archer, president of Bella Vista Neighbors Association.

50 yard trees will be given out along with a free bag of mulch. See tree varieties here. You will also be given instructions on how to plant and care for your new tree. And don't worry, the trees will be small so you can carry them on foot or on public transportation.

The trees must be planted in the ground, not in a container, on a private property in Philadelphia and there is a limit of two trees per address.

While you are picking up your free tree, you can also recycle your used batteries, light bulbs, plastic bags and hangers at the Weird Waste Recycling event led by Bennett Compost, Keep Philadelphia Beautiful and My Milkcrate.

On why it was important to get involved in this event, Morgan Berman, CEO/Co-founder of My MilkCrate said, "Our app provides a very real world benefit for people – taking you to businesses and events that share your values. So, it is important for us to stay connected and involved with these tangible experiences of helping people live more sustainably in the city and providing that in person connection to these resources."

"Plus, I have dead batteries I need to recycle. So, there's that too!" she added.

For the tree giveaway, you can register for a specific tree online here, but Archer said, don't worry if the type of tree you want is already taken. There is a wait list and walk-ins are allowed between noon and 1 p.m. Remember though that if you did register, then you must pick up your tree between 10 a.m. and noon. Register here.
