The Flyers have waived Nik Zherdev and his $2 million salary.

Zherdev has been on the outs with coach Peter Laviolette -- and the Flyers could not even find him in Raleigh on Friday night when Mike Richards came down with a stomach illness.

General manager Paul Holmgren said Zherdev and his agent, Jay Grossman, requested that they try and find something else. Holmgren said there was not much interest in way of a trade.

"It had eroded to the point where they wanted to see what else is out there," Holmgren said.

Zherdev declined comment and climbed into a limo outside the Flyers' practice facility.

Zherdev has 15 goals but has been in and out of the lineup in favor of Jody Shelle

"His agent and Nik, they obviously weren't very happy with the situation here," Holmgren said. "They asked us for other options. Nothing really came of that through trade. We'll see what happens at noon tomorrow".

Holmgren was asked about Zherdev's future with the Flyers:

"That's a topic for another day," he said. "It doesn't necessarily mean anything. The request came to me to get him to another team and I'm following up on it."

Did Holmgren think Zherdev would be returning Russia? "I haven't gone that far down the road yet," Holmgren said.

About the Flyers' suddenly banged up defense, Holmgren said:  "We have some young guys that we like playing with the Phantoms - Danny Syvret, Erik Gustafsson, and Matt Walker is an option."

What happened with Zherdev?

"I'm not sure, I think about this all the time," Holmgren said. "It was kind of an experiment to bring him here and see what he can do. There were periods of time it was good. He had 15 goals in limited power-play time and limited minutes.

"But over the course of time here, things have eroded. Nik's work ethic has probably dropped off. Right now he's just not fitting in. We'll see what happens. I think everyone wants to play and I don't think he's any different in that regard. The fact that he wasn't playing, maybe he didn't respond the right way a lot of times."

Phoenix Coyotes left wing Scottie Upshall has been suspended for two games and will forfeit $24,193.54 for an illegal hit delivered to Flyers defenseman Oskars Bartulis in Tuesday night's game at the Wells Fargo Center, the NHL announced today.

The incident occurred at 17 seconds of the second period. Upshall hit an unsuspecting Bartulis, who was injured on the play. Upshall was assessed a minor penalty for boarding.

Upshall's fine is based on his average annual salary and is calculated under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Upshall will miss the Coyotes' next two games -- tonight at Tampa Bay and Friday at Columbus. He will be eligible to return Sunday at Chicago.

In other news:

* According to Paul Holmgren, defenseman Oskars Bartulis, "is out with left shoulder instability and will require more testing tomorrow."

* Defenseman Sean O'Donnell returned to practice despite initial indication that he would miss 10-14 days with a lower body injury.

* Defenseman Matt Walker is on his way back from Adirondack to have surgery tomorrow on his knee. He injured it on Saturday. He is expected to be out a month.

Guess no takers on a trade. Guess no keeping him as an insurance policy. I know the Flyers have no cap space and are looking for cap room to bring Walker back up or get another D-man, but I think this is a mistake. They may need Z later. Can the Flyers bring him back up during the play-offs without any team being able to claim him?

predictable ending. you really don't want this guy on your playoff roster. he has a hard enough time playing with energy during december when the games don't mean as much. in the playoffs, when the checking gets tighter and the play gets incresingly more phyiscal, this will shrink even further away from the play and the corners. i would rather waive him and pick up another veteran d-man (now that bartulis is down and o'donnell is old & injured). i think we have enough depth at forward right now unless there's a major injury and even if that were the case, zherdev isn't going to fill a big void like that. see you later Z.

Not sure this is the right move. Our offense is starting to sputter a bit. It will probably pick up again, but the lack of an Ovechkin/Stamkos type means that we are going to need all the offensive talent we can get. I am willing to sacrifice his lack of defense for his offensive threat. Then again, I do trust Lavy and willing to defer to his knowledge over my amateur brain.

im completely against this move. zherdev was an offensive force. yeah his defensive part of the game was weak, he didnt have many assists at all, but he's still a double digit goal scorer and part of our top 5 offense. so i say it's a dumb move until i see what they do with the cap room theyre making.

This was inevitable. We don't need Zherdev in the playoffs. If Laviolette doesn't trust him enough to start during the regular season with injuries/illnesses to Richards and Betts, there's really no way he would start him in the playoffs. Zherdev is a selfish skater with some pretty moves, and that's about it. Good riddance.

...and now we know why this clown was banned to Russia last year. I completely agree with this move...he has talent, but not hustle and desire to play defense. What a waste of talent.

Our current line up is fine without him. If someone gets hurt then we'll have to make a call to the AHL and get Wellwood or someone else to fill the void in the meantime. Not a bid deal, I'm not worried and I trust both Holmgren and Lavy. Z was a jerk and barely tried. He take his 15 goals and go rot in the AHL or some where else. I want a team player, not a baby.

This guy was a turnover machine and played zero defense. No chance he was going to play in the playoffs. Flyers are hoping someone picks him up on waivers (Nashville possibly) which opens up cap space so we can go and grab a defenseman or bring Matt Walker up from the AHL.

I wonder if he will clear waivers or not. I could see it go either way. Whoever claims him would have to pick up the rest of his salary. If he isn't claimed, the Flyers can send him to the Phantoms and have him available if they need him. If someone claims him, I just don't think it's a loss though.

Zherdev is talented. Don't be so easily seduced. So are Ovechkin and the Capitals, and where has that gotten them in the playoffs? The games get so much tighter and goals become even more a function of hard work. The Zherdevs of the NHL fade in the post-season... This is a guy who has now been let go by three teams despite his obvious talents. When a club is trying to focus for the playoffs (i.e. become tighter defensively and grittier, which the Flyers are doing with a GAA of just over 2.00 in the last 17 games), one player who's not invested in the plan can fracture the group's resolve... Finally, the Flyers are 10-3 WITHOUT Zherdev. A better winning percentage without him than with him -- so then what's the point of wanting him in the lineup? To lose more often?
