Flyers sign another goalie

POSTED: Friday, April 2, 2010, 12:48 AM

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The Flyers have signed goaltender Sebastien Caron from the Swiss Elite League in Europe, general manager Paul Holmgren confirmed to the Daily News last night.

Holmgren said Caron arrived in the United States on Thursday. He cleared waivers at noon on Friday and will join the team for the final five regular-season games. His contract is a pro-rated $500,000 for the remainder of this year, which would pay him about $25,906 for the last 10 days.

Since he signed after the March 3 trade deadline, he won’t be eligible for the playoffs.

The Flyers are looking for a spark just to make the playoffs, especially after Brian Boucher's rough outing against the Islanders on Thursday night. It would be interesting if the Flyers were willing to test Caron tonight against Montreal in what many players call the "most important game of the year," but the Flyers are apparently sticking with Boucher. The Canadiens are tied with the Flyers in the standings with 82 points.

The Flyers look like a different, less confident team with Boucher in net - though no player could agree to that or put a finger on it when asked. They are 6-19-3 when Boucher has appeared in a game this year.

If a tandem of Boucher or Johan Backlund, who is battling a groin injury, could carry the Flyers past the first round of the playoffs, Michael Leighton could be healthy enough to pick up the reins in net. Leighton is rehabbing his high left ankle sprain and is still "a ways off" according to Holmgren.

Jeremy Duchesne, who made his first NHL appearance last night in relief of Boucher when the Flyers trailed 6-2, is expected to be sent back to the AHL Phantoms if Caron clears waivers.

Caron last played in the NHL in 2006-07, when he played one game each for Chicago and Anaheim. Before that, he spent three seasons with Pittsburgh, playing 90 games from 2002-06. Overall, in 92 NHL games, he is 25-47-12, with a 3.45 goals against.

Backlund is hoping to be ready for Sunday when Detroit visits the Wachovia Center, though he may not be needed with Caron on the roster.

Playoffs? He can't play in the Playoffs? Then why bother? Play one of the rookies and hope for the best. What is there to loose at this point? The team is going nowhere and everybody knows it. Remember last year, We have so much scoring we can afford to let go of some of our goal scorers. Knuble, Umburger, Lupal (all can score 25 goals or more). They were given up for almost nothing (yes we got a washed up Pronger and a penalty machine in Carcillo). In my opinion Holmgren has destroyed this team and has to go. Jeez, what is this town coming to, I dont' watch the Eagles because of the Vick hiring, I never watched the 76ers, now I'm starting to feel like not watching the Flyers. Well at least we have the Phillies, one organization who got a taste of winning and likes it.

Price might be ok, but I think would buckle under the pressure of playing in Philly just like he did in Montreal. He was fine in the regular season but bombed big time in the playoffs. Thomas was another flash in the pan Bruins goalie (See Byron Dafoe). They need to take a run at a guy like Josh Harding or Halak. I may be one of the last ones going down on this Flyers ship, but last night was horrible.

I've seen this happen numerous times in European soccer leagues (yes, I know I'm opening the doorway to soccer comments!) This is what is called a 'psychological whipping', in which by taking extreme measures, management expects to instill fear in the players and coach. Only, at this point in the season, it's too late to try it. This team has been inconsistent throughout the season, and obviously it wasn't a coaching problem (although they've been better under Peter). There's still a lack of chemistry in this team, and I believe it was aggravated by the departure of Lupul & Upshall. Bottom line, Mr Holmgreen should have seen this coming, since it happened last year. It's time to say goodbye, Paul!...

You guys are typical Philadelphia sport fan idiots. The problems come down to lack of goaltending. They were cruising along pretty good with Leighton and Emery. No player will say it, but that is the case. You all should go hope for your McNabb trade.

Actually, I think if the plan was to use Boucher in the playoffs, they would have just stayed with him for the last few games. My guess is that they want Caron to get them to the playoffs, and buy enough time for Backlund's groin to improve, then use Backlund in the playoffs , since you can't use Caron, and you don't want to use Boosh. At least I hope that's the plan; if they use Boosh it's a 4 game sweep for whoever they play.

Is Adam Morrison ready yet? It's a tough situation. I can't expect the team to play well when they have no confidence in what is behind them. A goalie is a MUST in the offseason. And not Michael Leighton or Backlund or any other retread. They must address this once and for all and get someone who can stop the puck consistently at an NHL level.

They signed this fellow cause they obviously can't stand teh sight of another start by Boosch. And Backlund still recovering from a groin problem, my guess is there hopin Caron can just hol di tdown and get them into the playoffs, and pray like hell Backlund gets healthy. Sorry Boosch but your done my friend

My disappointment with this team is not only the goaltenders. How about scoring some goals. We can handle a 2.96 GAA if we can score 3-5 points per game. 1 or 2 goals doesn't win games. I expect 10 - 12 players not returning next year if they want to have a better season.

How many years are left on Harnell and Brieres contracts? They are stealing a ton of money right now.
