Flyers re-sign Coburn

POSTED: Thursday, July 1, 2010, 12:29 PM

The Flyers have agreed to a two-year contract extension with restricted free agent defenseman Braydon Coburn.

Coburn, 25, has signed a two-year deal worth a total of $6.4 million.

That’s a significant raise from the $1.3 million he earned last season with the Flyers.

Here are the Flyers’ defensemen under NHL contract for next season:

Chris Pronger
Kimmo Timonen
Matt Carle
Braydon Coburn
Andrej Meszaros (acquired today from Tampa Bay)
Oskars Bartulis

With Coburn's extension and Meszaros' $4 million cap hit, the Flyers have approximately $3.2 million remaining on the $59.4 million cap but still need to re-sign restricted free agent forwards Darroll Powe and Dan Carcillo.

More coming…

Boucher will again be the back-up again next year. His contract is small and is reliable. Why would you cut him, any young goalie needs to play alot to develop (AHL) that's why you need a veteren goalie as a NHL back-up, remember that's how the flyers got into thre playoffs last year.

Carter will be traded mid-season when the whole return to goonery plan falls apart like it did every time Clarkie tried to renew the "Glory Years". Jody Shelley? O'Donnell?

Love to have Carcillo back, he may be undisciplined at times but no one tries harder out there then him. Be great to get Hartnell to agree to a trade, two solid weeks of hockey does make up for season of ineptness, Holmgren can find somebody to fall on the ice for way less then Scotty is making

Oskars Bartulis sucks. We need to replace him with a better d man and we are then set.

when Leighton was resigned, it seemed pretty clear Holmgren was going to go all-in on D...so far, so good

Yes, a very good signing. Coburn improved over the season, and especially in the Playoffs. Carle isn't going ANYWHERE.

sign Powe, dump Carcillo and hopefully this team can stay healthy next year and have another nice postseason run...

I'd take this team to start the season...I'd like to see Powe involved...but make a deal for a rental goalie at the trade deadline. This team has a lot of depth to make moves.

I'm betting Powe doesn't get resigned and I'm hoping Carcillo doesn't either. They could still waive Boucher and Cote (and probably will) to free up additional space. And, don't rule out trading Hartnell if he's willing to waive his NTC. Coming off a good playoff performance probably upped his worth despite a bad season.
