Flyers escape Long Island with win
UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Andreas Nodl killed three birds with one puck.
In one fell swoop, with 8:26 left in the third period, Nodl not only grabbed the momentum back from the Islanders with his goal that re-knotted the score at two but also ticked his scoring streak to two games - and most importantly - cured the Flyers’ power play woes.
Danny Briere beat Dwayne Roloson less than 3 minutes later, allowing them to escape embarrassment with a 3-2 win against the NHL’s worst team at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, in front of an announced crowd of 7,773 distributed tickets, the Flyers regained 1st overall in the NHL standings. The Flyers are now 8-1-1 against Atlantic division opponents, the best points percentage among NHL teams against division foes.
Before Nodl’s goal, someone apparently forgot to alert the Flyers that three periods are needed to pick up 2 points in the standings.
The Flyers entered the third period with a scant 1-0 lead, thanks to Matt Carle’s first period goal, but the Islanders - who have lost 17 of their last 18 games - didn’t seem to pose much of a threat.
Whoops. Sergei Bobrvosky’s first NHL shutout will have to wait at least another three days.
New York scored twice in a span of 36 seconds with P.A. Parenteau’s point blast and Frans Nielsen’s shot that trickled through Bobrovsky’s pads.
An irate Peter Laviolette signaled for a timeout and tore apart his team with an expletive-laden tirade after Parenteau cashed in on a Flyers defensive breakdown. If he was angry then, steam was visible exiting his ears after Nielsen’s weak goal less than a minute later.
On Saturday afternoon, Laviolette told the assembled media to “wait until tomorrow” for the Flyers’ to right their power play woes. They entered the game having scored twice in their last 41 opportunities.
Nodl chipped a shot past Roloson with 3 seconds left in the Flyers’ 4th power play of the afternoon to make that 3-for-45.
For the first time in 7 games - and just the second time in their last 12 games - the Flyers were outshot by their opponent, with the Islanders winning the shots battle 30-27. Most importantly, the Flyers left Long Island with the only important stat: two points.

sorry Michael, Bill Guerin just retired. It's on tsn.ca debbyt
Jeff Carter SNUBBED: check out the NHL's section on stats. Faceoffs. Carter is above 61%, yet his name has been omitted from the list. Carter doesn't show up in the overall faceoff wins or faceoffs taken. Wow, the league loves Crosby that much??? MichaelZoe
Dear Holmer, since Nodl has outplayed JVR, NOW is the time to trade JVR (and Hartnell if he'll waive his NT) to 1) clear up cap space 2) get a draft pick and 3) add a vetern Cup winning forward to play with Richards, add stability to the PP, and boost us to the next level: Champions. MichaelZoe
booby d: if it werent for the an above the shoulder tip in gimme goal & a leon stickle 2 ft offside non call, your bossy's, smith's, trottier's, & yes even bobby 'the fraud' nystrom were all going to traded away by bow tie billie for all their previous 7 game chokes to start the next season. those icelander's 4 cups are thankful exhales to the typical eradicate officiating in the nhl!
gsol3- It's a sign of class that they managed to win this game after falling behind unexpectedly (and undeservedly) in the third period. They should have scored on some of their earlier great opportunities but still got away with a regulation win. Give the Isles some credit, they played with grit and desperation, but the Flyers were clearly the better club, even on a sub-par day. The depth of the Flyers is amazing, however, in games against teams with superstars such as the Caps or Pens they might think about concentrating more firepower on the top two units. Expect the boys to be well-rested for the next few games; the matchup with the B's next weekend is a must-win.
look, i'll say it until i'm blue in the face and there is no avoiding it. If Nodl gells with Richards, wonderful. But you can't keep pushing Richards, Carter, Giroux, JVR and Nodl without a vet-leader foward who has won the Cup. All of the inconsistency on the PP, the up and down games, the lack of focus isn't going to go away when you face the Pens. Crosby, Malkin and Staal are going to beat our forwards, even if our D is better and we'll call goal tending equal. We need a leader to mentor Richards and the young guys. Ask Washington about scoring a ton of goals and being #1 (last year). They were golfing while the Flyers played for the Cup. We need to get BETTER, not stay the same. Adding a bunch of rookies to Richard's line isn't getting better. MichaelZoe
We sucked, but we still got the 2 points. More and more I'm starting to like this team to go all the way. Yeah, I know, their up against the cap, their goal tending has no pedigree and it seems at time Homer has lost his mind. But still, their they are, 1st or 2nd. in the East. I don't believe they peaked yet, and to still be 1st. or 2nd. in the East ?? Yep, this team is growing on me. Apollotwo
I've been up to the Island a few times for Flyers game. You can usually get a good seat for $10. You might actually have trouble finding a scalper. But it can easily turn into a 3 hour drive because of traffic and where the arena is located. They should be fighting with the Predators and Coyotes for the right to play in Canada. AreaMan
this stuff happens. they cant be on top of the NHL all season. we WON btw and I would rather my flyers save their best effort for the back end of the season, go in hot and decimate teams in the playoffs. lets please beat pittsburgh in the playoffs again. theeman1
can anyone put this in perspective, it's the first week of december, the flyers are off to a good start, they are at the top of the league in points, back to back games as a previous poster wrote, just off a run to the finals,i know there are fans out there who understand that this team won't be up for all 82, i wish the rest of you could. wait till february to start complaining. but alas this is philly and that's what we do best. deatheater
I'm a philly.com commenter and I hate everything anything writes and can't give anyone credit for winning. HandNik
Half the people there looked and sounded like Flyers fans. I would have gone but I would rather drive 3 hours to philly than to go to that dump! Many times Zherdev goes in hot team is changing and wastes his time. He is great, but not going through 4 people. Get open or in place for rebound. NYPHILLYPHAN- Carcillo in for Zherdev. That 1st goal of theirs was all on #93. potus
...there may well have been lots of seats available, but Zherdev had the best one for the Islanders first goal-it's nice to use your speed to get back, but try putting your stick in the passing lane when you get back there petemagoop- today was the second half of a back to back against a bad team. a letdown was to be expected. good job by lavvy to recognize that and lay into them. every team has bad spells...if the flyers can get through theirs while still picking up points, life is good. a 4 point weekend... beetle
The Islanders are so bad they should be disbanded. In fact, they have pretty much sucked their entire existence, except for 5 great years. BobbyD- 7,773 Tickets sold, for a Sunday afternoon game in December? That's absurd. Time to phone Jim Balsillie and move them to Hamilton. Pelti
JVR hurt? jking91
The problem the Flyers have faced since John Stevens coached this team is their ability to just not seem to care at times. Today against a team they should have beaten soundly, it took a 3rd period come from behind win to salvage 2 points. There should be no reason that Peter L. should have to call a time out and drive that point home. Glad for the win but the Flyers really need to address the nonchalant play that has plagued them for going on 2 years now. flyerrod
Comment removed.
The key to today's win was LUCK in not losing it. They come out strong in the first and then go to sleep after a 1-0 lead? This team has talent, but so does the Ice Capades which is what their Power Play resembles. The four points are nice, but they should be dominating teams like the Isles and Devils. DocGonzo
I have to agree that the flyers seemed to be coasting through most of the game. They were extremely lucky that it was the Islanders they were playing, anyone else and that is a "L" instead of a "W". flyerrod
The key to winning today's game? Playing the worst team in the league. bpkrier- So what? The Flyers are first (in the standings). Keep hiding, until you understand what you are reading. "we" does sound juvenile, like New York sports fans. road515
- Who is this "we"? And so what if you were first.
