Flyers training camp: Day 1 observations

After a few days of rookie camp to start the week and a day of meetings yesterday, Flyers training camp finally got underway with new coach Dave Hakstol on the ice with his full team for the first time.

Here are a few quick takeaways from the morning session, which saw all of the Flyers veterans take the ice.

Pump up the jam (too soon?)
There will be plenty more on this in tomorrow's Daily News (and here on Philly.com, but go buy yourself a paper), but it was pretty obvious what Hakstol was trying to establish in his first practice as coach. The pace was outstanding. The battles, especially in one-on-one drills, were intense. Between drills the Flyers skated laps. The organization has put a strong focus on conditioning, and it showed on Day 1. Some players were hunched over sucking wind. There really was a frenetic pace to it all.

No kids allowed
The first session of training camp did not include any of the team's coveted defensive prospects, or forwards like first round pick Travis Konecny. The prospects and Phantoms players hit the ice for the 1 p.m. session and ended their practice with a game. It will be interesting to see how and when prospects like Ivan Provorov, Samuel Morin and others are mixed into the practice sessions.

Wake-up call to the Schenn brothers?
When the first set of Flyers started matriculating onto the ice before the start of the 9:45 a.m. practice session, it became clear based on jersey colors who would be skating with each other as linemates on forward lines. So when Brayden Schenn was seen wearing a red jersey along with Scott Laughton and Chris Porter, it was fair to raise an eyebrow, considering Laughton and Porter are unlikely candidates to make the roster out of camp.

Schenn, who turned 24 a few weeks back, scored 18 goals and tallied a career-best 47 points last season.

Way-too-early line combinations
It's almost downright crazy to overreact to line combinations on Day 1, because a lot of things can change. So take the few paragraphs above this with a grain of salt. The same for the rest of these line combinations and defensive pairings from the 25 players (including two goalies) that hit the ice on Friday morning:

Forwards
Jake Voracek - Claude Giroux - Michael Raffl
Matt Read - Sean Couturier - Wayne Simmonds
R.J. Umberger - Vinny Lecavalier - Sam Gagner
Pierre-Edouard Bellemare - Ryan White - Chris VandeVelde
Brayden Schenn - Scott Laughton - Chris Porter

Defensemen
Mark Streit - Nick Schultz
Michael Del Zotto - Evgeni Medvedev
