Briere gets 3-game suspension
Danny Briere has been suspended for three games by the NHL for his stickwork on the Islanders' Frans Neilsen in the final minute of the Flyers' 6-1 win Saturday night.
Briere had a conference call with the disciplinary committee at 10 a.m. this morning.
He will miss the Flyers home games tonight against Carolina and Thursday against the Rangers, and Saturday at the Islanders.
Briere and Neilsen were jawing prior to a faceoff and after the puck was dropped Briere went to Neilsen's face with his stick. He was called for a cross-check major and then given a game misconduct.
That led to a lot of pushing and shoving between both teams and included a game misconduct for Dan Carcillo.
The Flyers have recalled left wing Eric Wellwood from Adirondack, on emergency conditions. Wellwood will be available to make his NHL debut tonight against Carolina.
Wellwood has scored three goals and added an assist in 11 games for the Phantoms this season. The native of Windsor, Ontario, was selected by the Flyers in the sixth round (172nd overall) of the 2009 draft.
More to come ...
Apparently the suspension is longer because Briere is considered a repeat offender under the NHL rules. They were just discussing this on NHL network's radio/tv show. According to them he had another incident within 18 months, which puts him into that "repeat" category. TJR
its clear the league has a beef with the Flyers, not sure why but its becoming a little out of hand Fabulous- I hate to say it, but Briere really fully deserves that three-game suspension of his. Just look at the way he swings his stick, obviously trying to hit the Dane Nielsen in the face. Absolutely intolerable, not at all the sportsmanlike conduct we are accustomed to see from this gifted player. He will be sorely missed in those next three games and is irreplacable. Time to swallow this bitter pill and let's move on to the next game. This is the temporary end of the Hartnell-Briere-Leino combo, I am wondering what line combinations the Flyers will go with this week. LET'S GO FLYERS!
3 games seems a bit extreme, but I think a suspension was warranted. They are cracking down on head shots and he clearly cross checked him in the head. Briere has got to be smarter than that. Tar Heel 1
An absolute joke! When does the bias from the NHL toward the Flyers end? Maybe in the next lifetime?! matty177
Comment removed.
3 games is a fair suspension. Briere is a repeat offender and needs to keep a cooler head...Trent Hunter doesn't deserve a suspension, and he didn't deserve to be tossed from the game for the hit on Meszaros. That hit was a good clean hit. It's hockey, not ballet. JSaq
...and Hunter's suspension? Phront_Runner
Three games because he plays for the Flyers. If he was a Penguin he would not have been suspended. jp8899
The NHL doesn't want the Flyers in 1st place in their division, that spot is reserved for Cindy & The Penguins, and will do whatever it takes to get them there. BobbyD
This is a joke he should be suspended for one game max. That is definitely flyers treatment. If Sydney did it they would have givin him a friggin trophy. The NHL is such BS. juicy@34
Laughable. kolocop
Justified to get a penalty? Yes-it was a deliberate illegal move. But THREE GAMES!!! NO WAY!!! Pamela Edmonds
joke. spittooncj
How about DiPietro? He speared Briere after that faceoff! If Hextall had done that in his day he would be gone for 10 games! And nothing for Hunter?.... Longboat
