Briere faces discipline for crosscheck

POSTED: Sunday, October 31, 2010, 1:12 PM

Danny Briere will have a conference call tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the NHL discipline committee to discuss a possible suspension for his stickwork on the Islanders' Frans Neilsen in the final minute of the Flyers' 6-1 win last night.

Briere and Neilsen were jawing prior to a faceoff and after the puck was dropped Briere went to Neilsen's face with his stick. He was called for a cross-check major and then given a game misconduct.

That led to a lot of pushing and shoving between both teams and included a game misconduct for Dan Carcillo.

Briere was wrong and maybe he will get a game but refs are the real problem. Things were getting out of control with Konopka and than that idiot Gillies. Not to mention DP that could not stop a single puck was trying to act like a tough guy. I am sure all Flyers wanted to do is fight after leading 6:1. What a joke.

I have no prob with Briere missing a game or two, but please explain to me how Trent Hunter is not facing suspension for a boarding major that could have broke Mezaros neck?

Supposedly, Nielson had said something to Danny about his car accident this past summer. If this is true then I applaud Briere and even wish Briere would have done something before the faceoff, his child could have died in that accident.

I like Carcillo. We need an enforcer of his moxie.
But I LOVE the fact Briere made Nielsen eat wood. You dont spear, and mouth off a guy so much smaller as Briere is, just not equal gamesmanship. Next time, maybe he will think differently.
    Go FLYERS!

Aisaac, obviously you didn't watch the Penguins game where Carcillo scored the goal that put the Flyers up from a 1-1 tie and broke the Penguins and their fans backs. Say what you want about him- but he came up big there. Try watching a game....

Carcillo is still a waste of money, he has yet to come up big in key situations. This was not a key situation and another stupid penalty by Briere. The fact is, he'll probably be suspended and you have to be smarter than that, especially when you're easily winning. It doesn't matter whether you agree with the suspension or not, it's still a dumb penalty to take.

What the hell does Nielsen have to say in the last minute of a game where the Flyers wiped the ice with his team? Maybe when you're down 6-1 at the end of the game, you'll keep your mouth shut instead of trying to intimidate a guy a foot shorter than you after the game's long been decided.

DiPietro speared Briere and Briere reacted inappropriately. Briere should be suspended, but the fact that DiPietro speared him first should be taken into account, with only a 1 game suspension.

the refs lost control of that game, that's why danny took matters in to his own hands!

Danny B needs to be suspended for three games---taught a lesson----little guys should not mess with big guys.

My gut reaction was 1-3 games. Then I remembered how Colin Cambell used to ALWAYS say how much he hated the Flyers when he coached the Rangers, so more like 3-5 games. Of course if Sissy Crosby did it there wouldn't even be a hearing.

Crosby does stuff like this all the time. Like on friday he pulled off Kimmo's Helmet in the corner after the play already left the zone. I know thats not a suspendable offence but its still dirty. How about the time he jacked that guy in the nuts last year.

@flyerdommo - You're right - from this video, it's hard to see what went on between Briere and DiPietro, but there's a video from another angle that I saw last night after the game that clearly shows DiPietro use his stick to jab at Briere's groin. The angle is from the corner, sort of over DiP's shoulder.

I love everything about this. Danny, probably the smallest guy on the ice since he's been seven, is forced to respond when Neilsen clearly gets in his face before the faceoff. So he comes up high with the stick. Good for him. He'll get suspended for two games, Neilsen will try to fight him the next time they play, and Carcillo will take off his own skate and try to kill him. I like hockey.

It's hard to recognize on the video what DiPietro did to Brière with his stick, but Danny's offense is clear and obvious. Even as a long-time Flyer fan one would have to admit to the fact. Hopefully, Danny will not have to sit for more than 1 or 2 games. We'll see tomorrow.

Yeah, Briere was out of line, but did anybody notice DiPietro spear Briere? Seems like the refs missed it. And it looks like all Carcillo does is knock the dude down from behind - I didn't see an elbow or stick in there.

I'm wondering what the Dane Nielsen said to Danny Brière prior to this incident. Can't have been too friendly, considering it looks a bit like Brière is basically trying to chop Nielsen's head off with the blade of his stick. Of course he will be suspended for this act of stupidity and mindless brutality. He should have laughed off the Dane, and Carcillo's intervention was a bit over the top, although my impression is he thought Danny must have been seriously brutalized by the Islanders. The rematch is going to be a different story, with all the Isles' toughies already in the locker room at this stage of the game. Hopefully Meszaros and Nodl are okay.

Neilsen sort of ducked into it, and he clearly wasn't even injured, but even if he had stayed upright Briere's stick was going to be too high. The knuckleheads at the NHL have to enforce the rule consistently, and that probably means Briere out for a couple of games.

I love that Briere tries to hack Neilsen's head off, and the announcers are saying that Carcillo should be suspended because what he did was unnecessary! No bias against CarBomb there! He and Hartnell have no chance in this league.

Pretty funny! DiPietro was wiffing all night. What makes him think that if he took a swing at Briere it would connect?

And the 6 foot 8 new yorker was falling forward with his head down , just as Brier was giving a stick check. TOTALLY LEGAL

Bobby Clark hockey!! A bit high, but the guy dove right away, then got up when he wasn't getting any attention by the refs. Next Saturday's game should be a dandy!
