Oh, say, can you see: Hot dogs worth saluting

Few things are as American as hot dogs. And few Philly area spots do them as well as these shops do.

Few foods say "America" as well as hot dogs.

Grill them, boil them, deep-fry them, microwave them (OK, don't microwave them).

Dress them up with a thin bead of mustard, or layer them with cheese and anything else you can think of.

Place them on a Stroehmann's roll, a potato bun, an Italian roll, or tuck them into a jelly doughnut (OK, don't tuck them into a jelly doughnut).

You get the picture. The varieties are endless.

Here are some Philly area shops that we like.

Our short list by no means is definitive or all-inclusive. We left out a bunch of carts, and we are certain that your favorite is not here.

Included are a few wiener specialists. (In short, the "haute" dog establishments.) We also have a couple of dives.

Either way, you'll pay as little as a buck or two, or as much as $8.

Don't like 'em? It's still not the wurst investment you'll ever make.
