Federal Donuts' chicken sandwich ready to roll

Port FedNuts - as FedNuts' entry is known - will sell cold brewed ice coffee and bags of six mini cinnamon sugar doughnuts. Its secret weapon, though, is not the fried chicken pieces that the shops are known for.

Memorial Day weekend will mark the opening of the seasonal Spruce Street Harbor Park, and several new food outlets are set up in shipping containers, including the Jose Garces restaurants (including a revival of Chifa), Franklin Fountain and its Shane Confectionery, and Federal Donuts.

Port FedNuts - as FedNuts' entry is known nautically - will sell cold brewed ice coffee and bags of six mini cinnamon sugar doughnuts. Its secret weapon, though, is not the fried chicken pieces that the shops are known for or even the doughnuts.

It happens to be a new fried chicken breast sandwich ($7), designed by chef Matt Fein.

The skinless chicken's breading is seasoned with buttermilk ranch. Then it's fried and topped with American cheese, Red Hot mayo, and sliced pickles and tucked inside a Martin's potato roll.

We road-tested it and found a great balance of spicy (the mayo), sweet (the roll), creamy (the cheese), crunchy (the chicken), and sour (the pickles).

A FedNuts rep says there are no plans to sell this sandwich at the shops.
