'Twin Peaks' sequel starts shooting next month

David Lynch will direct the entire sequel of "Twin Peaks," for release in 2016 (or 2017, or whenever he's ready).

Good news for "Twin Peaks" fans: Filming starts filming next month, with David Lynch at the helm.

"I never had any doubts we were going to get him back," Showtime Networks president David Nevins said Tuesday at the Television Critics Association's summer meetings in Beverly Hills.

In April, Lynch had taken to Twitter to announce his resignation from the project "because not enough money was offered to do that script the way I felt it needed to be done."

"It became clear," Nevins said, that Lynch needed more than the nine episodes the network originally budgeted for to tell his story.

How many more episodes?

"I expect it to be more than nine, but it's open-ended," Nevins said. However many there are, Lynch plans to direct them all, "like one long movie."

And it will be ready when it's ready.

"I want it as badly, and as soon, as the biggest fans in the world want it. I'm hoping 2016," Nevins said, while not ruling out 2017.

As for casting, he's mostly mum, beyond the already announced return of Kyle MacLachlan.

"I think that you should be optimistic that the people you want will be there," along with some surprises, Nevins said.
