Whom Not to Marry

It's basic stuff that your mother probably told you but still bears repeating - does your guy use money responsibly? Is he overly attached to his mother? Does he have a sense of humor? Does he have friends?

It's basic stuff that your mother probably told you but still bears repeating - does your guy use money responsibly? Is he overly attached to his mother? Does he have a sense of humor? Does he have friends? Maureen Dowd, New York Times columnist extraordinaire, took a break from her usual political opining earlier this week to share the wisdom of a 79-year-old retired Catholic priest who spent four decades lecturing high school girls about "whom not to marry." Dowd quotes Fr. Pat Connor, of Bordentown, N.J.,  as saying, "Hollywood says you can be deeply in love with someone and then your marriage will work...But you can be deeply in love with someone to whom you cannot be successfully married." In the piece, which was for a time the New York Times most-emailed article, Dowd summarizes his sage advice, including such gems as the importance of avoiding the strong silent type. (Communication is key.)

Unfortunately, it's too late, though, for Christie Brinkley, who's now divorced from her fourth husband, and probably also from A-Rod whose wife also has filed for divorce. But maybe not for the next starry-eyed gal wondering whether she can fix the problem drinker she's with. Because as the good priest says, "people are the same after marriage as before, only more so."
