Police: Homeless man, 46, charged in stabbing of ex-girlfriend, 26

A 46-year-old homeless man has been charged with attempted murder and a slew of related offenses for allegedly stabbing his 26-year-old ex-girlfriend several times in Mantua yesterday.

Police said Gary Johnson, who also goes by the alias Anthony Johnson, attacked the woman on Spring Garden Street near 31st around 2 p.m. yesterday afternoon.

Witnesses told investigators they saw Johnson pushing the woman and making jabbing motions into her body before he fled east on Spring Garden. The victim was found by police officers bleeding from several stab wounds to the chest, abdomen, knee and wrist. She was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she remained Thursday in serious but stable condition.

Responding officers tracked Johnson down about a block from where he stabbed the woman, police said. He had a cut on his hand and was treated at Presbyterian Hospital. He was subsequently arrested and charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of crime, reckless endangerment and related offenses.

A police source said the pair were part of the same drug-treatment program housed about a block from where the stabbing occurred.
