Tow truck driver shot on the job

An accident scene turned into a crime scene this morning when a tow truck driver was shot while responding to a fender bender in Feltonville, according to a witness and police.

Police and witnesses are in dispute as to whether the tow truck driver was shot by another man in the business or by a driver he blocked when he parked his tow truck.

The 36-year-old tow truck driver pulled up to the accident scene at Hunting Park and Whitaker avenues about 10:30 a.m. and was shot in the leg by a rival tow truck driver who also responded to the scene, according to police public affairs.

But witness Jack Roth said the tow truck driver was shot by a man in a black Cadillac Escalade when he refused to move his vehicle when asked by the Escalade’s driver.

The tow truck driver then got in his truck and, with a gunshot wound to the leg, moved his vehicle, allowing the Escalade driver to escape, Roth said.

The tow truck driver then drove himself to 24th/25th Police Districts, just a few blocks away on Whitaker Avenue. He was taken to Temple University Hospital by cops, where he was listed in stable condition, police said.

A detective on scene said he did not know what version of events was correct because witnesses were not talking to police.
